World Autism Day – April 2 💙
April is an exciting time!
Autism Edmonton is celebrating April as Autism Appreciation Month. We highlighted why the other day, but suffice to say, we appreciate the community around us so, so much. We want to recognize the folks who have helped shape not only our organization but also the community and broader autism movement.
Dr. Heather Brown – an Autistic researcher passionate about supporting the academic achievement and overall well-being of Autistic children, youth and adults
Dr. David Nicholas – head of the Social Work Department in U of C and focusing on navigation and aging adults
Catherine Cicuttini – created the first Autistic Women’s+ Retreat at Autism Edmonton!
Dr. Angela Feehan – Postdoctoral Researcher and Speech Language Pathologist interested in the intersection between language development, mental health, and neurodevelopment
Jessica Burylo - an Autistic self-advocate, doctoral student at the University of Alberta, and accessibility leader focused on advancing inclusion and identity-centered wellbeing
Dr. Grant Bruno – provincial advocate, creating culturally responsive healthcare models supporting Indigenous youth in the area of neurodiversity
Amanda Montey – creating safe space and learning for Autistic and ADHD individuals
Terri Robson – older adult Autistic advocate raising awareness
Emily Coombs - advancing 2SLGBTQIA+ autistic representation in academia
Dr. Lonnie Zwaigenbaum (and the whole ARC team) – Director of the Autism Research Centre, focusing on early development in autism
Our very own Morine Rossi – who lives, breathes, and works autism and truly is a champion for Autism Edmonton
It would be impossible to include everyone in this list, and it really is just a sample of some incredible people in our community.
This month, take some time to learn more about the work being done, celebrate the autistic and neurodivergent people in your life, and while this doesn’t erase systemic issues that create challenges, it’s still important to celebrate joy!
