Hypoglycemia: Sudden drops in blood sugar.
Hyperglycemia: Dangerous spikes.
Dehydration: Kidney stress and fatigue.
Blood Clots: Increased risk due to thicker blood.
π¦ Traffic Light Guide to Fasting:
π΄ RED ZONE β VERY HIGH RISK (Must NOT Fast)
Severe hypoglycemia or DKA in the last 3 months
Sugar β₯ (27.8 mmol/L) recently
Uncontrolled Type 1 Diabetes (A1C > 7%)
Pregnant women on insulin
Kidney failure (Stage 4/5) or dialysis
π‘ YELLOW ZONE β HIGH RISK (Advised NOT to Fast)
Uncontrolled Type 2 Diabetes (A1C > 7%)
Controlled Type 1 Diabetes
Type 2 on multiple daily insulin injections
π’ GREEN ZONE β MODERATE RISK (Can Fast with a Plan)
Controlled Type 2 Diabetes (A1C < 7%) on diet or Metformin only
Patients on GLP-1 (e.g., Trulicity) or Basal insulin only
π The Emergency Exit β Break Your Fast Immediately If:
Sugar < (3.9 mmol/L)
Sugar > (16.7 mmol/L)
Sugar near (5.0 mmol/L): re-test every hour

Testing: Finger-prick does NOT break the fast
Hydrate: Drink plenty of water from Iftar to Suhoor
Dates: Break your fast with only 1β2 dates
