It is with a heavy heart I am announcing my official resignation as an RMT and closure of my massage practice. With all of the challenges Covid-19 has brought this year and my growing family (our beautiful baby arrives early December), it is unfortunately no longer feasible to keep my registration active. I hope to some day practice massage again in the future and when that time comes, I will be reaching out to you all to let you know my new business details.

I want to take this time to thank you all so much for all of your support these past few years. It has been an absolute pleasure working with you all and getting to know each and every one of you. It has been such an incredible journey filled with so many blessings and for that, I am truly thankful! I wish you all the best and hope to see you again on the massage table one day.

Hi all and happy Saturday! I have been getting quite a few messages inquiring whether I will be opening my practice again soon or not and if I have a date or timeline in mind. I had hoped to be able to take some appointments again by July however, due to my personal circumstances, and the lack of improvement with Covid-19, I will unfortunately be remaining closed with no plans to open until the Coronavirus has truly begun to disappear. I thank you all so much for your continued understanding of the situation. It has been a very tough time and decision and I truly miss working with you all, but it is sadly not feasible for me to open during this time with the way my in-home clinic is set up and the required protocols RMTs now must follow as directed by the MOH and the CMTO.

I did note in my last update and would post some names of places that are going to be opening back up again. I haven’t heard of too many yet, but this is what I know so far:
- I have heard that Natalie Purchase RMT in Uxbridge is going to be taking appointments again (however I am uncertain if she will be taking new clients at this point in time while she is in the early stages of reopening) but, she is a wonderful massage therapist and I highly recommend her.
-Uxbridge Physio has also recently opened again. Another place I would definitely recommend!

-In Lindsay, Point of Balance has begun a slow opening. They are a great place as well and have a lot of wonderful protocols in place to keep everyone as safe as possible.

-I also believe both chains- Massage Addict as well as Hand & Stone Massage are openeing back up in surrounding areas that you can check out too!

I hope this helps and I will continue to report when I hear of any more places/ RMTs opening up during this time.

Stay safe and well,

Lydia

Good morning everyone! I wanted to give another update as you most likely have heard the recent updates that health care professions are being given the go ahead for a controlled return to work. We have been directed that if unprepared for a return to work at this time, we are not required to open, but if we are ready for clients, that the treatment of emergency cases is allowed in a slow and controlled manor as we ease back into a (hopefully) more “normal” work schedule.

At this point in time, I am uncertain which RMTs in the area are planning to reopen but I will keep an ear out and post sources here if/ when I do get word so if you do require urgent massage care, you will have an idea of some places you can still receive treatment.

I personally will be keeping my practice closed for the long haul as I still don’t feel the benefits outweigh the risks in this scenario. I am a high risk person myself, as well as having immunocompromised family members that I don’t want to jeopardized any exposure to.

Again, Thank you for understanding and I hope you are staying well. Best thoughts with you all,

Lydia

05/19/2020

Hello everyone. I hope you are all doing well in these uncertain times. I wanted to give an update about what is currently going on and being so suede in the world of Massage Therapy but have found it hard to write all my thoughts into words. A fellow RMT of mine, Jeri Roberts, published a very well written blog that summarizes everything I’ve been hoping to share in what “The Future of Massage Therapy” May look like.

I quote her words below:

“These are some strange times we are living in. In the weeks that have followed the lock down in the province I have been riding an emotional roller coaster. Recently, the dominating emotion is grief.

Grief for the world of massage therapy. Everything about the way we practiced is now gone, at least for now……

My industry is at a turning point, not only in how we provide treatment, but also determining if it is safe. When we return to practice it will be a completely different experience for both therapist and client.

Currently, our regulatory college, the CMTO is working with other health regulators, and the Government of Ontario, to evaluate our operations and systems to develop guidelines to ensure we can provide safe care once we are allowed to reopen. This will include dramatic changes in sanitation and hygiene protocols as well as the implementation of stringent screening guidelines. While the CMTO has not officially issued our new standards of practice, below are some guidelines that other provinces have put in place for therapists returning to work in the coming weeks. Ontario will likely follow suit on some, if not all of these guidelines.

What Will a Massage During COVID-19 Be Like?

- PPE:
Your RMT will be fashioning PPE in the form of a mask, gloves, safety glasses, apron/smock or shirt that will be changed between every treatment. Clients will be required to wear a mask during the entire visit in the clinic.

- Less appointment availability:
RMT’s will need to invest more time between clients to properly sanitize our spaces and stagger appointment times with other therapists in the clinc. In addition, some provinces are recommending therapists treat a maximum of 4 clients per day (half of normal volume for some).

- One Set Appointment Duration:
Some provinces are recommending only offering 60 minute treatments as it is easier for clinics with multiple therapists to stagger appointments.

- Payment/Intake Forms:
These things will become contactless. Online intake forms and tap debit/credit will become the new norm.

- Screening before every treatment for COVID-19 symptoms with temperature check upon arrival.

- No more waiting in the reception area, you will likely be asked to wait in your car until 5 minutes before your appointment time.

- Treatment rooms may feel sparse and sterile due to removal of fabric furniture and anything else that cannot be wiped clean.

- Waivers:
With this unprecedented time, many professional liability providers are unable to give assurance that policies will cover litigation / claims arising from unintentionally spreading the COVID-19 virus via our clinic, or serious health consequences as a result of dislodging blood clots. To protect themselves, many RMT’s will likely require waivers to be signed pre-treatment.

Is Massage Safe Right Now?

There is always an element of risk when receiving any treatment, and massage therapy is no exception. A global pandemic with a new virus has undoubtedly added another layer of complexity when determining the level of risk involved. Since COVID-19 is unprecedented, the information surrounding it is fluid and we are learning new things about it every day. Some of what we are discovering combined with what we already know is giving rise to concerns about the safety of massage during this pandemic.

Emerging Contraindications: There is mounting evidence linking blood clots and COVID-19. These mysterious blood clots can occur even when no other signs and symptoms are present. This is particularly relevant to massage therapy because this is one of the more serious contraindications to treatment. We put direct pressure on the tissues and blood vessels in the normal course of our work, which has the potential to dislodge a blood clot causing serious health consequences for the client. This can include a pulmonary embolism, stroke, or in the most extreme case, death. Unfortunately, some COVID-19 patients present with stroke as their first sign, meaning we cannot properly screen for this danger in the same way we do for other health issues.

Even though I would like to think of these scenarios as unlikely and happening in far away hot spots like New York, it’s not. An RMT within my professional association in Ontario contracted COVID-19 from one of her clients in March. She then passed it on to two others, all of them developing blood clots. One of them having serious complications as a result. This hit close enough to home to give me pause that it could be a very real possibility of returning to practice.

Hierarchy of controls:
This is a system used to minimize or eliminate exposure to hazards. Under this framework, physical distancing is ranked most effective for minimizing the spread of COVID-19. Given the close contact our job requires, maintaining the recommended 6.5ft distance between client and therapist is impossible. It places both therapist and client at an increased risk for acquiring and transmitting the virus. Depending on the treatment length, we are in close contact in a small treatment room for 30min-90min. Our only safeguard is PPE, which is ranked as the least effective for reducing exposure.

So is it Safe or Not?

I can tell you when you receive a massage going forward, it will be “as safe as possible” meaning the therapist will do all that they can to prevent the spread of COVID-19 by implementing the guidelines put forth by our regulatory college. Unfortunately, the safety of getting a massage during this pandemic needs to be based on more than just increasing sanitation protocols and wearing PPE. It also needs to be about further investigating and considering the blood clots that are showing up in asymptomatic individuals. All things considered, at this point we cannot as an industry definitively say there is not an increased risk to receiving a massage treatment during this time.

What’s Next?………..

As we sit in limbo, massage therapists are taking stock and evaluating the level of risk associated with the return to practice. Some may be worried about their health, or spreading the virus to a family member, or client that may be high risk, or immunocompromised. Other’s may be concerned about that availability of PPE, or the emerging evidence about blood clots. Some may be considering the financial ramifications of operating at half the volume with increased overhead to be able to operate safetly, or a combination of all of the above. There are therapists that are being proactive and are getting prepared to safety open their doors when we are given the green light. Each therapist will view the level of risk differently for their personal and professional situation. As well, every therapists’ timeline to return to practice will vary. We are all navigating unchartered territory.

In the coming weeks/months (once massage therapy is phased into the reopening of the province) you will likely see massage therapists open their doors, some close their doors, while others change careers, or go inactive.

As for me, I will be reopening my practice… When?… I’m not sure…

While I wait for word from our government and regulatory body I will be doing my own risk-assessment through continuing to review research and new information as it comes to light. I am eager to get back to doing what I love and helping my clients feel better. However, I must carefully examine whether the benefits of returning to practice once permitted outweigh the personal and professional risks.”

Thank you for reading and understanding. I will be updating again in the future as we receive more direction from the CMTO and government. I do want to note that I anticipate the long-term closure of my practice until we see drastic improvements with Covid-19. I personally feel the risks do not outweigh the benefits at the current time, for all persons involved- my clients, their families, my family and myself. Let us all stay safe and healthy.

All the best,

Lydia Dale Banks, RMT

Mental Health check in 💛 how are YOU doing?

Times are a little uncertain right now and leaving some of us out of work has brought on loads of anxiety and other mixed feelings. Please remember to continue to practice positivity and make sure to be kind to yourself and to others. We are all in this together from afar and we will make it through. I hope you and your families are staying healthy and safe during this time 🙏

[ A quick update in regards to my Massage Therpay practice:
The Ministry of Health and the College of Massage Therapists of Ontario have deemed all massage practices as “non-essential” during this time - meaning I will be unable to resume work until I receive further notice in the future from the government and my regulatory college about Covid-19. ]

***COVID-19 UPDATE***

Hello everyone!

Due to the increasing risk of the Covid-19 virus, it is with a heavy heart that I have decided I will be suspending all massage appointments for March.

The College of Massage Therapists of Ontario and Chiropractors have sent out a notice this afternoon to all of their registrants recommending the closure of all “non-essential” healthcare services during this ever changing pandemic. With much consideration, I will be following through with this recommendation for the safety of my clients and the general public by cancelling all appointments until further notice. We must put our safety first and take all of the necessary precautions to help limit the spread of this coronavirus.

Once April arrives, the situation will be reassessed and if we see improvements at that time, I will be re-opening online booking, rescheduling cancelled appointments and taking new bookings again.

In the meantime, please limit your social interactions, keep those hands washed and stay well 🙏

Please don’t hesitate to contact me if you have any question.

Hey everyone! For those of you who may have missed receiving my email, I have some news updates to share with you!

First item on the agenda - I have changed my business name from being Lydia Dale RMT to Family Forever Registered Massage Therapy! I wanted a name that represented the inclusiveness of my practice, treating clients of all ages from infants to the elderly. I commonly treat whole families and loved the idea of reflecting this into my business.

Secondly, after a year of renovations, I have opened a new location just North of Lindsay located on county road/ highway 36! My usual rates and services apply along with my 20% discount for all new clients on their first booking. There are a few new services added as well including infant massage, hand/ foot and scalp massages as well.

And last up, due to my new opening in Lindsay and an already growing clientele here, I felt it was time for me to move on from renting at Salt Life Cave and Spa. Instead of finding a new place to rent, I am converting to doing part time mobile massage for Uxbridge and Sunderland areas (for my regular clients and direct referrals only). My regular rates will continue to apply for home visits within town for now. Please do not hesitate to ask any questions you may have about this transition.

You will continue to be able to do online booking for my Lindsay location however, if you would like to book with my new mobile services, please email, call, Facebook message or text me directly at (905) 806-2736 to make arrangements. Due to fully running my own schedule, I am open to booking home visits any day of the week depending on what my schedule is from week to week- I will announce dates I will be in the area through Facebook and am open to taking requests as well.

I am ecstatic about these new changes and can hardly wait to enter this next chapter. 2020 will be a big year!

Thank you everyone for your support and understanding! Below is a before and after picture of my renovations for my new clinic space!
