Slippery sidewalks, driveways and icy parking lots can be risk factors for falls in winter. Avoid a bad fall with these top tips!

Walk like a penguin
The penguin waddle helps you keep a centre of gravity over the front leg as you step, instead of split between the legs. Short strides also help keep your centre of gravity, which helps avoid falls. When walking, extend your arms out from your sides to increase your centre of gravity. Don’t keep your hands in your pockets!

Keep walkways clear
Shovel snow and scrape ice as soon as possible. Liberally sprinkle ice melt product or sand onto walkways to provide foot traction and to make sure surfaces don’t turn to ice.

Lighten your load
Carry fewer bags on snowy days, since excess baggage can throw off your balance and make it tougher to regain your balance once you lose it. Keep your hands free by putting away your phone while walking – you may need to catch yourself!

Boost balance with exercise
You can’t control the weather, but you can improve your balance through regular exercise

Visit your chiropractor
Don’t let a fall get you down. If you do take a tumble, visit your chiropractor. We can get you back to doing the things you love to do and our team will work together to help prevent future falls.

As winter settles in, it is important to prioritize the care of our feet. Reflexology massage offers numerous benefits, from enhanced circulation to pain relief, making it a valuable addition to your self-care routine.
Reflexology is a healing practice that targets specific points on the feet. When pressure is applied to these areas, it encourages relaxation and supports overall health.
❄cold weather can cause blood vessels to constrict which can lead to reduced blood flow in the feet. Reflexology helps expand these vessels, promoting better circulation and improving blood flow; which will not only keep your feet warm but can also nourish the skin.
❄reflexology is effective in inducing deep relaxation.
❄many people experience foot pain in winter. Studies have shown that reflexology can significantly decrease foot pain after just a few sessions.
❄ reflexology stimulates the release of endorphins which can make the short dark days of winter a little easier.

While reflexology is vital for winter foot care, combining it with other practices will further support your foot health.

While technology like smartphones, tablets, and e-readers, can improve your quality of life, it comes with a price: being huddled over your devices for long periods of time can do more harm than good. You’ve probably experienced the strain it puts on your upper body. These conditions even have their own name: Tech Neck.

Tech neck is a condition characterized by the repetitive strain placed on the neck due to prolonged periods of poor posture when using and viewing screens. For every 15-degree increment of forward head tilt, an additional 5 to 15 pounds of pressure is exerted on the neck. Essentially, our heads become heavier, and our neck muscles must work harder and harder to support them.

Follow these tips to help you avoid tech neck strain:
🩵Take frequent breaks - LOOK UP! Give your neck a break from the pressure of looking down.
🩵 Straighten up - LISTEN TO YOUR BODY! If a position is causing neck or back pain move, stretch and avoid that position.
🩵 Use support - Hold your phone or tablet closer to eye level. Use a stand and/or external keyboard.
🩵Stretch - Put your hands at your sides and rotate your shoulders to relieve tension. You can also tuck your chin down to your neck and then lookup. These simple actions can help relieve some of the tension built up in your neck due to the forward-down position we often adopt when looking at our device.

We can help with tech neck symptoms. Book a chiropractic adjustment or massage to help relieve the pain and tension.

Most trips, slips and falls happen in the home and the risk increases as we get older.
Prevention is the key and you can improve the safety in your home by just making a few simple changes.

Bathroom:
-use non-slip mats inside and outside of the tub or shower
-use a bath seat or hand rails to make it easier to get in or out
-install a raised toilet seat

Kitchen:
-keep items you use regularly within easy reach
-use gliders on your chairs so they move easier
-wipe up spills right away
-never climb on a chair or stool to reach items

Stairways:
-keep stairways clear of clutter
-ensure handrails are on both sides of the staircase and that they are secure
-make sure there is good lighting in the stairwell
-if you are carrying something while on the stairs, make sure you can see where your are going

Outdoors:
-make sure railings are secure
-repair any loose steps
-keep pathways clear of shovels, yard tools, newspapers, etc
-when carrying items in from the car, make several trips or ask for help

Other tips:
-always sit down when putting on or taking off shoes
-keep your house well lit and install night lights

You can prevent falls by making small changes to your home and lifestyle and making sure you are healthy, exercising, eating well and using any devices that can help keep you safe.
