Many women use alcohol to wind down at the end of the day or have a nightcap to help feel drowsy so they can drift off to sleep. And it works... temporarily. A glass or two of Shiraz may leave you nodding off during your favorite Netflix series. But it ultimately lessens the quality of your sleep and increases restlessness toward the early morning hours, especially if you're drinking right before bed.

Drinking within an hour of bedtime lengthens your non-REM sleep and shortens your REM sleep during the first half of the night; as a result, you don't get into that deep restorative sleep for very long. As your liver sops up the ethanol from your bloodstream, your body can go into a bit of withdrawal during the second half of the night, making you restless and more likely to toss and turn. Avoiding alcohol can also help reduce the number and severity of hot flashes. So have that glass with dinner, but switch over to tart cherry juice (more on that in my book Next Level) before bedtime. Your sleep with thank you.

As a woman, you have few precious natural resources as important as your muscles. They're what keep you strong, able and independent. They're also frighteningly easy to lose. around age 30, women begin to lost muscle density. Lean muscle mass slips away to the tune of about 3 percent per decade between the ages of 30 and 80, while strength declines 30 percent between the ages of 50 and 70 and takes a major nosedive after that.

The researchers of the landmark Framingham Disability Study drove this home when they reported that 40% of women between the ages of 55 and 64, 45% of women between 65 and 74, and 65% of women between 75 and 84 reported they could not lift 10 pounds! TEN POUNDS! That's a bag of cat food.

As women, we start out with less muscle than our male peers, and we lose it faster as we age (we cannot separate aging effects from perimenopausal effects). Although estrogen (specifically estradiol/E2) is anabolic in nature, our bodies become more anabolically resistant as we progress through our decades. So yeah, it can be harder for us to build muscle, especially as we age. But it's not impossible!
