🌟Stretch The Piriformis! 🌟

The piriformis is a small but important muscle located deep in the buttock, underneath the larger gluteal muscles. It runs from the sacrum (base of the spine) to the top of the femur (thigh bone). What the piriformis muscle does:

Rotate the hip outward (external rotation)
Stabilize the hip joint during walking and standing

The sciatic nerve passes very close to (and in some people, through) the piriformis. When the muscle is tight or irritated, it can compress the nerve, leading to piriformis syndrome, which can cause buttock pain or sciatica-like symptoms down the leg.

How to stretch the piriformis:

Do these gently and stop if you feel sharp pain or numbness.
1. Figure-4 stretch (lying down) #4
Good for beginners
Lie on your back with knees bent.
Cross one ankle over the opposite knee (forming a “4” shape).
Gently pull the bottom leg toward your chest.
You should feel the stretch deep in the buttock of the crossed leg.
Hold 20–30 seconds, repeat 2–3 times per side.

2. Seated piriformis stretch
Easy to do at work
Sit upright in a chair.
Cross one ankle over the opposite knee.
Keeping your back straight, lean forward slightly.
Hold 20–30 seconds, repeat 2–3 times.

Remember STOP if you feel sharp pain or numbness. Happy Saturday!
