Blessed Imbolc!
Imbolc (pronounce IM-blk) is a pagan tradition on the Wheel of the Year that celebrates the midway point between the Winter Solstice and the Spring Equinox.
The celebration focuses on the returning light and warmth that spring soon brings, renewal, planting seeds that will begin to grow as spring nears, and can also be linked with the Celtic Goddess Brigid (although it it not needed to connect with deities to do this ritual or celebration). Imbolc is celebrated from the evening of February 1 to the evening of February 2.
This is a simple and relatively short ritual you can do to celebrate Imbolc and the returning light of spring to come.
Imbolc Inspiration Candle Ritual
What you will need:
- A white candle (chime, taper, tea light)
- Dry rosemary for cleansing energy (optional)
- Bay leaves for success- crushed (optional)
- A sharp tool (toothpick, pin, etc)
- Anointing oil (olive oil, rosemary essential oil, chamomile essential oil, or whatever feels right to you)
- A fire safe container (mini cauldron, tin can, candle holder)
- Paper towel or napkin
- Lighter or matches
- Paper and pen
Instructions:
1. Take some time to settle into your space, meditate if you choose, focus your awareness on the moment, your self and your intention.
2. Use your sharp tool (toothpick etc) to carve “inspire me” into your candle while visualizing opening yourself to insight, wisdom, and new beginnings.
3. Put a few drops of your chosen oil into the palm of your hand and rub the oil onto your candle, focusing on moving your hands towards yourself to bring in insight and new energy.
4. Sprinkle your rosemary and bay leaf on a paper towel and gently roll your anointed candle in the herbs or sprinkle on top if you are using a tea light.
5. Place your candle in your fire safe container or candle holder, and light your candle.
6. As you focus on your lit candle, you can call on the coming light of spring and the energy of Imbolc “I welcome the light into this space. I welcome the warmth and bringing of new life. I am open to your inspiration and healing energy. And so it is.”
7. Sit with your candle as it burns, focusing on the flame or meditating to connect with the energy. You may choose to write down and ideas, thoughts, or inspirations that come to your mind.
8. When your candle has burnt out, or you are done with the ritual and choose to s***f your candle, take a moment to thank the coming light for its renewal.
*do not leave burning candles unattended.
🌕 In addition to being Imbolc, it is also a Full Moon.
The Full Moon energy brings time for illumination, reflection, and release; a space to choose to keep loving forward with some things and letting others fall away.
You can set out your crystals, cards (Oracle, tarot, etc), tools, water for Moon water (it can be ser out inside on a windowsill if youre where it freezes and does not need to directly see the moonlight for it to work), and even yourself for a Moon bath.
🗓️ It’s also the first of the month so its a fantastic time to clear then energy in your space, and if you feel called to, do an abundance ritual such as a cinnamon ritual or a money bowl.
