Shoulder tendinitis is inflammation of the tendon usually from repetitive motion or overuse. As we age this becomes more problematic as the tendon becomes less flexible and susceptible to injury. Risks of tendonitis include repetitive motion of the shoulder, overhead movements, underlying arthritis, poor posture, underlying joint stiffness, and muscle weakness. Tendonitis can affect any of the tendons of the shoulder. Most often the rotator cuff tendons are affected.

Our physiotherapists at Meridian Spine & Joint, are experts in assessing the shoulder complex. We will determine if you are suffering from tendonitis and which tendons are affected. Following your assessment, we will guide you through a specific rehabilitation program to assist you on the road to recovery. Call us at (519) 471-7900 and we will book you in today!

Millions of people every year are diagnosed with some form of arthritis. Arthritis is defined as inflammation and tenderness of one or more of your joints. Primary symptoms include joint pain, swelling and stiffness and generally worsens with age. Osteoarthritis and Rheumatoid arthritis are the two most common types of arthritis.

Shoulder arthritis is characterized by pain in the shoulder and difficulty with reaching upward to perform tasks such as brushing your hair and reaching up to a high shelf.

Don't let shoulder arthritis slow you down. Meridian Spine & Joint Physiotherapy has over 35 years of experience in treating multiple joints including the arthritic shoulder. You will require a specific shoulder assessment to determine if the arthritis is the root cause of your pain and symptoms. An individualized treatment plan will be developed with specific treatment for arthritis of the shoulder. We will offer you targeted exercises and techniques to ease pain, improve mobility and regain strength. Call us today at (519) 471-7900 to see one of our clinicians to take the first step towards an active life!

Scoliosis is an abnormal lateral curve of the spine. The mid and lower back are the most common areas affected. Often scoliosis is diagnosed in childhood or early adolescence but may develop and worsen with aging.

Signs of scoliosis may include:
-Tops of the shoulder are uneven
-One shoulder blade is more prominent than the other
-One hip sits higher than the other
-When bending forward, one side of the rib cage is higher than the other
-The head is not centred over the pelvis
-The entire body leans to one side
-Waist level is uneven

Scoliosis is either idiopathic (developed with time and no known cause), congenital (caused from birth) and neuromuscular (secondary to neurologic or muscular disease).

At Meridian Spine & Joint, our physiotherapists will provide scoliosis-specific exercises that are often beneficial to stabilize, stop or slow progression and correct non-structural changes. We believe that exercises and specialized physiotherapy techniques help improve posture, and mobility and enhance quality of life.

Are you embracing the outdoors? Whether you are gardening or tackling DIY projects, you want to take care of your body.

It is that time of year when we will start to clean up our gardens and rake the leaves. We all want to avoid hurting our spine. At Meridian Spine & Joint Physiotherapy, we believe in keeping you active to be able to do the essential tasks you want or need to get done.

Following some simple rules can help:
1. Avoid reaching beyond the length of your arms. Moving closer to the task will help.
2. Rake, dig, or pick up leaves without pain. Place one foot in front ahead of the other will decrease the tension in your back, and alternate leg and arm positions to avoid strain.
3. Use proper body mechanics when lifting or moving heavy objects by standing with feet shoulder-width apart, tightening abdominals and using legs to bend and lift.
4. Warm up and stretch for even just 5 minutes before and during fall clean up can help to avoid strain.
5. Take breaks and change up the outdoor chores. This can be simply taking a water break or instead of raking perhaps you change to trimming.

Remember, proper body mechanics can be your best ally in preventing and recovering from injuries. Call Meridian Spine & Joint Physiotherapy today at (519) 471-7900 to consult with one of our clinicians and enjoy a pain-free active lifestyle.
