Think you're a supinator? Pronator? Well, you might be wrong. People have a hard time predicting the mechanics of their own gait and foot type.

Listen in this week as we talk practice philosophy with Richard Jacobs of Finding Genius Podcast

Foot stability exercises can take the pressure off of the injured tissue, helping the foot and leg work together more efficiently. "But I'm really a fan of being dynamic and seeing how someone's responding." - Dr. Colin Dombroski

OK, so you've booked an appointment with a footcare specialist about the pain in your feet. Now what??

Here are 5 questions you should take with you to that appointment to ask the clinician.

1. Do you make the orthotics? An on-site lab is definitely a plus. Pedorthist are trained in the assessment for AND fabrication of orthotics.

2. Will the orthotics hurt my feet? They really shouldn't. That said, you should be given guidance on how to ease into them and what to do if new symptoms arise.

3. Do I need cushioning in the heel? This will vary based on your unique case but for heel pain and plantar fasciitis symptoms, the evidence points to yes.

4. How long will the orthotics last? A quality constructed orthotic was last on average 2-4 years. In particular instances, some folks require annual or even semi-annual replacement.

5. Will you take a 3D cast or mold of my feet? The answer to this must be a resounding YES. No exceptions. What other questions would you add to this list?

What other questions do you have for your footcare specialist?

The prescription, design, and manufacturing process for orthotics is both an ART and a SCIENCE.

More importantly. What worked for your mom or dad might not work for you even if the apple didn't fall far from the tree and you were blessed with "their feet".

Seek help from those foot care providers who listen to you and treat your feet like the unique structures they are.

Want to know the single greatest predictor of orthotic therapy success?

It's not how your feet were casted. It's not the materials they are made from. It's how COMFORTABLE the devices are to wear!

If they're not comfortable, you won't wear them, and if you can't wear them there's no chance in H-E-double-hockey-stick they'll be able to help.

So, if your orthotics aren't comfortable, do yourself (and the person who dispensed them to you) a favour. Don't throw them to the back of your closet or toss them in the trash bin. Call in for a follow up so that the issue of comfort can be addressed.

When injury or pain hits our first thought is to protect the area but one of the worst things we can do is stop moving altogether.

Instead, modify your activity.

That might look like temporarily taking on a different form of exercise or work. Or it could look like not moving as far, as fast or for as long as you typically would.

Whatever you decide to do, just keep moving. Movement enables good blood flow, production of happy hormones, and restful sleep. All things essential for pain management and injury recovery.

No two people are the same.
No two feet are the same.
No two shoes are the same.
No two orthotics are the same.
No two responses are the same...

You get the idea.

There are a lot of variables to account for (some we don't even know about yet) when managing foot pain.

The best evidence suggests that an individual is best treated as just that, an individual. With The Foot Strength Plan and The Plantar Fasciitis Plan you can tailor the recommendations to where you are in your journey and still experience results. This may or may not include orthotic intervention.
