Doulas should be a need not an accessory to birth and should be accessible to everyone
Did you know???
The World Health Organization would like to see every family have a Doula available to them?
Here is why...
About the research
The Cochrane Pregnancy and Childbirth’s Trials Register was used, and 26 randomised controlled trials were found that provided data. The trials were from 17 countries, and included more than 15 800 women who gave birth in a health facility.
What were the findings?
The authors found that women who received continuous labour support were more likely to give birth vaginally, and had fewer caesarean, forceps or assisted vacuum births. In addition, women were less likely to use pain medications, were more likely to be satisfied with their birth experience and had shorter labours. It was also found that newborn babies were less likely to have low ‘Apgar’ scores – a test for the vital signs of health and well-being in infants. No harms of continuous support were identified.
As doulas we want to provide our service to everyone! You are the reason we got into this. You're our passion. However at this time we are still pushing to be put under OHIP coverage, and in the meantime please don't feel you can't reach out to a doula even if you have low income. Doulas are sweethearts. We will work with you to the best of our ability.
