Orthotics in Research: From High-Tech to Felt Pads?

Not all orthotics used in studies are created equal — and that really matters when interpreting the results.

In research, "orthotic" can mean:
• A fully custom-made device designed from 3D scans or casts
• A prefabricated insert pulled right off a shelf
• Or even a simple felt pad placed under the heel, arch or length of the foot

This represents a significant variation in the level of support, lifespan, and impact on foot and lower limb mechanics.

So when reading studies about orthotics, we always ask:
• What kind of orthotic was actually used?
• Was it custom made/customized for the participant?
• Was it intended to correct motion, redistribute pressure, or add comfort?

Not all research findings apply to every type of orthotic — and that's key when translating science into clinical practice. Here at SoleScience, our team digs into the research to ensure we are constantly striving to provide YOU with better outcomes.
