I, like many others, was raised with my father's family and didn't know much of anything of my mother's line. Her mother was born a Tye. Not a common surname in Nova Scotia. The discovery of this headstone for William Tye lead me to an incredible story. In 1843, William's father, Charles, was convicted for the crime of stealing half a sheep and along with a previous conviction for stealing 6 geese, he was now considered the worst of the worst. For these crimes, his sentence was Transportation for Life. Meaning he was shipped to Tasmania and never allowed to return to England. Through my research, I found some remarkable information. At the time of his conviction, he was described as being 6 ft tall, 32 years of age, belonged to the Church of England, could Read and Write a little, was married and had 4 children. He was described as having an oval shaped face, brown hair and whiskers, a swarthy complexion, a low brow, hazel eyes, a medium nose, mouth and chin. He also had two tattoos.

100% of the research on Charles Tye was done online.

While my research focus is Canada, it invariably leads to England, Scotland, and the United States. I have also located records in areas such as South Africa and Bermuda. Due to the generosity of fellow researchers, there are many transcribed records to be found at local libraries and genealogy groups. Digitization of documents has been increasing at an incredible rate with access to many being through subscription sites. I have access to many sites and am able to conduct extensive searching online. Have a question or a Brick Wall? Message me or email to digginmygenes@hotmail.com
