When your child is upset, does your body react before your brain can catch up?

Do you feel an emotional need to have the behaviour stop 🛑 immediately?

Do you feel like there is a full body reaction from you? Tight jaw, clenching in your chest?

Before your brain can kick in, your body might be telling you that what is happening with your child is a fire alarm ⏰ fire 🔥- an emergency. What is happening is that you have absorbed what is going on with your child and your body needs it to stop.

Often you will feel deeply triggered by anxiety then shame, then explosive anger.

It’s not your fault.
It is nothing more than a nervous system that learned early in life that big feelings are something alarming.

When you feel this way you might:
🌟Give in to what your child is demanding for a quiet life
🌟Drop any boundary you have set in the past because you want it to stop
🌟Set boundaries with consequences that have nothing to do with the behaviour
🌟Proclaim “I’m done. I don’t know what to do. I don’t care. I am over it.”

What your child feels is that:
💥Their feelings are a five alarm fire
💥That they can topple your feelings
💥That you are not in control

Time and time again if this happens feelings become even scarier for you and your child.
This means your child will bring bigger behaviours and you will have bigger reactions.

What we do in Calmer Families is help you to observe big feelings and separate your child’s from yours.
We help you to understand that there is nothing wrong with you- your nervous system needs a reboot.
What will result is:
💕Calmness from within you
💕Your child will see that you are firm, unwavering, clear and kind
💕Your child’s nervous system will develop in a healthy, connected relationship with you

You will become not only the bigger nervous system in the room, you will be the light house in the storm of your child’s big feelings (as I have stated for the last 16 years in Calm Mum).

We open registration for Calmer Families Friday.
Stay tuned. 💕

If you are wanting to feel more connected, less reactive, less intense and more joy as a parent, stay tuned.

I have taken the framework for my Calm Mum program and built it out for every family member.

I will be launching a new program based on this.

Over 800 women have participated in Calm Mum and said it was life changing- now it is for parents and children as well. It is based on neuroscience and attachment and will give you the tools to be firm, unwavering, clear and kind- while helping you feel less reactive, less stressed and more connected to your children and your partner in your parenting journey.

Sign up details are coming this Friday. ❤️

Crying it out has been proven time and time again to cause unfavorable changes in brain chemistry.

Crying it out has been proven time and time again to cause unfavorable changes in brain chemistry.

Denmark is officially moving away from the cry it out method after a nationwide study revealed it was still being taught in most municipalities. More than 700 psychologists signed a unified statement urging immediate discontinuation of the practice. They emphasized that prolonged crying without comfort elevates cortisol and affects how the infant brain forms emotional and stress regulation pathways. This national push reflects growing scientific awareness of early neural sensitivity.

Researchers highlight that when babies cry alone, their stress signals rise sharply. Without caregiver response, the brain begins wiring for self protection rather than trust. These early patterns influence later attachment styles emotional stability and even learning behavior. Denmark’s decision aligns with decades of neuroscience showing that infants depend on caregiver regulation to build healthy neural circuits.

Despite this, the cry it out approach continues to be recommended in parts of the U.S. where outdated models of infant independence remain common. Scientists argue that babies do not learn self soothing through isolation. Instead they learn through repeated experiences of comfort which stabilize heart rate breathing and emotional processing. This helps form long term resilience.

Denmark’s shift highlights a global conversation about infant well being. The science is clear. Responding to a baby’s distress supports healthier development than leaving them to cry alone.

New parents need reinforcements, not visitors.
Babies need their parents, to be on their chests for co regulation and brain development. Babies don’t need visitors- their parents need helpers.
Cook, clean, bring food, do laundry, walk the dog, change the sheets, do the groceries, play with the older kids.
Don’t bring your toddlers, your sniffles, your tickley throat, your kisses… babies don’t need any of that and neither do their parents.
Be a reinforcement, not a visitor.
