Pets bring joy at any age, and for many seniors, that companionship can make a big difference. 💛

Studies show that having a pet supports both physical and mental wellbeing. Some of the benefits include:
🐕‍🦺 Staying active - Regular walks get seniors moving and enjoying fresh air
💙 Lowering stress - Petting a dog or cat can help people feel calmer and happier
🐈 Companionship - Pets provide constant company, helping reduce loneliness
🕰️ A sense of routine - Caring for a pet creates daily structure and something to look forward to
🐾 A sense of purpose - Knowing a pet depends on you adds meaning and joy to everyday life

If you or a loved one could benefit from the companionship of a pet or need support to care for one safely at home, our caregivers are here to help. 🐾💛

In honour of Nutrition Month in Canada 🇨🇦, we’re excited to share one of our favourite recipes from the Dietitians of Canada's “Nourish to Flourish” cookbook. 🍲🌱This recipe comes from Sue Mah, a multiple award-winning dietitian who has dedicated her career to helping Canadians eat well! 🌱

Beef Barley Soup | Serves 8 🥣
Ingredients
• 1½–2 lbs beef, cut into 1-inch cubes (beef shank or sirloin works well) 🥩
• 2 tbsp canola oil
• 1 large onion, diced 🧅
• 3 large carrots, diced 🥕
• 2–3 ribs celery, diced
• ⅔–¾ cup pearl barley (less for soupier, more for stew-like) 🌾
• 8 cups reduced-sodium broth (4 cups beef + 4 cups chicken)
• ¼ tsp dried thyme 🌿
• 1 bay leaf

Instructions
Season beef with salt and pepper.
In a large pot or Dutch oven, heat oil over medium-high heat. Sauté onions until soft.
Add carrots and celery; cook about 5 minutes.
Add beef; brown on all sides.
Stir in barley and thyme, then pour in broth.
Cover, bring to a boil, then reduce to a simmer for 35–40 minutes until barley is tender. 🍲
Finally...Serve and Enjoy!

This is so important! 🧠🤍 Dementia impacts not just the individual, but families and entire communities. No one should walk this journey alone. 💙

Dementia is one of the most pressing health and social challenges facing our country.

Brain health is shaped across a lifetime: by biology, lived experience, access to care and the systems around us.

This month, we’re looking at brain health through the lens of women, who are disproportionately impacted by dementia, both in diagnosis and in caregiving.

Because awareness alone isn’t enough.

We need investment in research. We need stronger public policy. We need community-based programs. And we need collective action to reduce risk and ensure no one is left without support.

The Alzheimer Society of Canada — as part of a federation serving communities nationwide — is advancing brain health, supporting people living with dementia and driving meaningful change.

Because brain health is lifelong and no one should face dementia alone.
