🇨🇦 owned, female owned and operated As Canadian Certified Pedorthists, C. Ped (C)'s, we specialize in custom made foot orthotics to relieve foot, ankle, knee and hip pain, as well as correcting gait abnormalities. After taking a medical history, assessing the lower limbs both weight bearing and non-weight bearing, we are able to video a person's gait to determine if custom made foot orthotics would be beneficial. We use our unique SOLE Technique to set us apart from other orthotic clinics. We provide stabilization using orthopaedic fundamentals of gait with our carefully layered and engineered technique to build your foot orthotics. We also have the training and capability to do footwear modifications (ie lifts, flares), and custom footwear. We can measure and fit for both Performance-Grade (15-20 mmHg) and Medical-Grade (20-30 and 30-40 mmHg) compression socks to help with your sore, swollen and tired legs. All work is done at our on-site lab. A physician's prescription is required for all custom made foot orthotics.

Morton's neuroma is a painful condition that affects the ball of your foot (commonly between your third and fourth toes). If you have a Morton's neuroma it may feel as if you are standing on a pebble in your shoe or on a fold in your sock.

Morton's neuroma involves a thickening of the tissue around one of the nerves leading to your toes. This can cause a sharp, burning pain in the ball of your foot. You may have stinging, burning or numbness in the affected toes.

Typically you won't be able to feel the neuroma
but you may experience the following symptoms:
🦶A feeling as if you're standing on a pebble in your shoe
🦶A burning pain in the ball of your foot that may radiate into your toes
🦶Tingling or numbness in your toes
🦶Removing your shoe helps to relieve the pain

High-heeled or tight shoes have been linked to the development of Morton's neuroma. Many people experience relief by switching to lower heeled shoes with wider toe boxes. Custom-made orthotics with special support may help to releive the discomfort. However, in more severe cases, corticosteroid injections or surgery may be necessary.

Wasn’t sure how I would even begin to start this shoe 👟 Took a little engineering to make sure we kept the look and feel of a shoe that needed a lift. When we put a lift in your shoe we want it to look the best we can do so that you’ll wear it (and people will have to do a second glance to actually notice it)

Have a challenging shoe that needs a lift? Give us a try!

Do orthotics only fit one pair of shoes??? 👟

Not usually. We often try to make sure you are able to transfer the orthotics between different shoes. That’s why it’s important to bring in a few pairs of your favourite shoes to your initial assessment appointment!! 👍

However we do occasionally make the orthotics specifically to fit a certain style of footwear as needed. What fits in your running shoe might not fit your soccer cleat. With our on-site lab and skilled pedorthists, we are able to help get your orthotics into the footwear you need!

Are you wearing the right sized shoe? 🤔

If you have a hard time finding shoes, you may just be wearing the wrong sized shoe 😮 Ensuring you are wearing the proper length and width is crucial for the health and comfort of your feet.

Here are some quick tips for the next time you are buying shoes:
1️⃣ Proper length is important. The majority of people are wearing shoes that are too small (stuck on a number), or way too long to accommodate for width. The proper length is having a pinky width of space between the longest toe and the end of the shoe.
2️⃣ Proper width to ensure the widest part of the foot (usually between the big toe and 5th toe joint) is sitting in the widest part of the shoe. If you aren't wearing the proper width, the foot can get pinched causing many issues in the forefoot.
3️⃣If all else fails, book an appointment with one of our Pedorthists. They will measure you, suggest shoes that would suit your feet, and even order you in shoes to try. It takes all the hassle out of shoe shopping!

Why should you get custom-made orthotics???

There are lots of options for insoles that are on the market. Whether it be off the shelf, customizable, or custom-made orthotics we know this can be confusing 🤔 You may wonder what is the difference and why is custom-made orthotics preferred for certain feet?

Last year, we had a client come in that had purchased an insole from another provider. This insole was not working and the pain kept coming back. So, this person decided to try custom orthotics.

As you can see from the photos, the insole they had purchased elsewhere (bottom photo) was not supporting the foot properly. When comparing it to the custom-made orthotic (top photo) you can see the orthotic is made for the foot, giving this person the support they required.
Sometimes these insoles can give the foot enough support, but depending on the foot and the issues you are experiencing custom-made may be the way to go!

If you are unsure if you could benefit from a custom-made orthotic or an off the shelf insole, feel free to contact us!

DID YOU KNOW….

Christy’s great, great grandfather, George Schinbein, was a shoe maker in the Kitchener area in the late 1800’s. He made custom shoes for the village of Conestogo where he owned his store. This giant shoe he made as a sign to hang outside of his store.

Today you will find this giant shoe in the Shantz Orthotic Solutions clinic in London, ON. We’d love to have you see it in person and take a guess what size shoe it would be!

Shoe modifications is our expression of art 👟 🎨

All the lifts that have come through our doors recently has kept us busy. We have tons of clients with leg length differences who all depend on us to create works of art with their shoes. Because if they look like Frankenstein shoes, who actually wants to wear those???⁣⠀
⁣⠀
At Shantz Orthotic Solutions, we take a lot of pride in making your shoes functional, but also fashionable. For us, it's a huge reward watching your face go from scared to amazed when we show you your shoes!⁣⠀

The majority of shoes we see at the clinic for modifications are for clients with a leg length difference.
However, other modifications we have done are stretching, arch cookies and/or metatarsal pads on shoes that don't accommodate orthotics, and also creating more support in a shoe with a buttress.
⁣⠀
Want to see what we can do? Take a look through our profile to view some of our shoes! Keep your eyes on our posts for some of the more creative ones we’ve done lately!!

Hallux rigidus causes pain and stiffness in the joint, and with time, it gets increasingly harder to bend the toe 🦶

Hallux rigidus is actually a form of degenerative arthritis. This disorder can be very troubling and even disabling since we use the big toe whenever we walk, bend down, climb up or even stand. Many patients confuse hallux rigidus with a bunion, which affects the same joint, but they are very different conditions requiring different treatment. Since hallux rigidus is a progressive condition, the toe’s motion decreases as time goes on. In its earlier stages, when motion of the big toe is only somewhat limited, the condition is called hallux limitus. But as the problem advances, the toe’s range of motion gradually decreases until it potentially reaches the end stage of rigidus, in which the big toe becomes stiff or what is sometimes called a frozen joint.

Custom-made orthotics with a special addition under the first toe can help reduce pain caused by this condition. In more serious cases, a toe fusion may be necessary to stop the toe from moving completely.

Did you know we make everything on-site and it’s all crafted by hand? Yup, we do. At Shantz Orthotic Solutions, we do a biomechanical assessment and gait analysis to get a realistic picture of your feet and how you’re walking or what might be causing pain. Then we make the molds of your feet with plaster of Paris. We fabricate the orthotics right on-site in London, Ontario. And when you come in to pick them up, we fit them into your footwear. We do it all right here. Hand crafted for each individual. Built for you, built by us.

Did you know you can put orthotics in skates? ⛸

If you are spending a lot of time on your skates and noticing pain or discomfort in your lower limbs, looking at your foot/ankle/knee alignment as well as the shape of your foot are important factors to consider. For people who spend a lot of time on the ice and are experiencing pain, we often recommend either a custom or off-the-shelf orthotic to go in your skates. If it’s something we can help with as pedorthist then we will let you know!

Generally an orthotic to go in your skates will be thinner and possibly different than what you put in your walking shoes. So a lot of time at the rink usually needs a separate pair of orthotics for the skates. We’re able to work with the skate stores to help get the pressure off your ankles, reduce heel and arch pain, and hopefully put your feet at a better angle to get maximum edge of the skate blade. Sometimes it’s a collaboration of the pedorthist and skate shop to modify the skates by moving the blade on the boot or punching out and area that runs on the foot. There’s lots that can be done to make you more comfortable!

If you skate lots, bring your skates with you to the appointment so we can see how your foot works in the skates!!
