Celiac Disease is a serious autoimmune disease where the ingestion of gluten found in wheat , barley, rye and other grains leads to damage in your small intestine. Celiac disease is a common disorder that affects 1% of the population.
My journey with this disease began 20 years ago but wasn’t diagnosed till 8 years ago. I had what many would call abnormal symptoms so they never suspected Celiac Disease . You see it’s not just abdominal issues , weight loss, fatigue, diarrhea, nausea, bloating , gas, vomiting etc... it comes disguised as so many other symptoms too. I had none of the above !!
My issues were all skin related! My hands were so bad I wore white gloves, red , sore , itchy , my skin was falling off the palms of my hands . The doctors tried everything, cortisone creams galore ... nothing worked . It wasn’t until my son was asked to be in a study at University Hospital for type 1 diabetics and celiac disease! You see there is a coalition between the two . 9% of Type1 Diabetics are also Celiac! Both my son and I have Type1 Diabetes! Both also have Celiac Disease now!
Just 30 days after being diagnosed Celiac and going completely gluten free all my skin issues disappeared . To this day if I ingest something with gluten my hands break out instantly .
I wanted you to know that Celiac Disease does not show up just as abdominal issues, but if you are having skin problems you might just want to get tested or go off Gluten to see if it makes a difference. Just from my experience I wish someone had figured it out 12 years sooner .
