Registration for the ReJuv Senior Fitness Classes through Advanced Medical Group is NOW OPEN. The classes begin March 20th – April 28th. We are located at 230 Victoria St, between Western University and St. Joseph’s Hospital. Program runs Monday/Wednesday or Tuesday/Thursday with an option to add a third day on Friday’s.
Next Class opening is April 1st, 2023. Space is limited so don’t wait!

Are you a previous member of the CCAA and looking for senior fitness groups again?

Ask about our Rejuv senior fitness class at Advanced Medical Group with classes by CCAA Certified Instructors. Classes are 1 hour and include an aerobic warmup, cardio, stretching/mobility, and weight machines.

Next group opening starts March 21st. Classes are capped at 10 people with 3 meters between participants and follow all COVID protocols. Vaccination requirement still in place.

Exercise Plays a Preventive Role in the COVID-19 Outbreak

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), people with medical conditions, including obesity, heart disease, and diabetes, are at increased risk for more severe COVID-19 outcomes. A UK study linked obesity, smoking, and physical inactivity with COVID-19 hospitalization. An article published in Frontiers in Physiology outlined evidence supporting physical activity and exercise as a strategy for improving health and minimizing the effects of COVID-19.

The authors outline evidence in support of three key ways in which physical activity may be protective against infection:

1. Exercise that increases energy expenditure can be an effective weight-loss strategy. One study shows that exercising for 60 minutes more than four days per week can result in a loss of about ½ pound per week.

2. Cardiorespiratory fitness is linked to lower visceral adipose tissue (or deposits of fat tissue around internal organs), and lower fitness levels can increase cardiovascular disease risk.

3. Inactivity is associated with impaired metabolic health, including insulin resistance, increased visceral adiposity, and decreased muscle mass. The authors note that, according to exercise guidelines, 150 minutes per week of moderate exercise can lower metabolic syndrome prevalence.
Additionally, they note that exercise is inversely associated with inflammation, which is important given that an intense inflammatory response characterizes COVID-19. Studies have shown certain inflammatory markers typically overproduced when the immune system is fighting an infection tend to be lower in people who exercise regularly.

The study concludes that 150 minutes of moderate activity is a good initial target, consisting of a foundation of aerobic and moderate-intensity continuous training with appropriate amounts and types of resistance and high-intensity interval training mixed in.
