Field Day 1: Aquilla
We loaded the bus to head to Aquilla. An export rose farm approximately a one hour drive away from our campground at Carnelly’s. Along the way we noticed how green and wet everything was from the amount of rain which has fallen in recent days. The landscape was spotted with giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, antelope, and baboons. No matter how many times I come here I still marvel at the majesty of Kenya, its land, and people. Today we treated patients with musculoskeletal issues due to repetitive work strain, an unusual amount of high BP in young people, infertility, skin infections, respiratory infections, and fractures. We also had a number of unconfirmed TB cases which speaks volumes to the work/life conditions of the farm workers. They are gainfully employed and yet still struggle with health conditions often only observed in those who are living in the worst conditions. Today we treated 349 patients. Less patients than in previous years, but likely due to a slow season at the farm, it being Sunday therefore people attending church, and a football game going on.
I made a little friend named Moses who seemed quite smitten with me. He was there with his little sister Joy. I recall Moses from a few years ago when he was smitten with . He has certainly grown into that little face of his. I’m so thankful that it was much cooler weather today than in previous years. Tonight we sleep at Carnelly’s and then hit the road on the way to Magadi. A yet to be determined location as it has been quite a few years since Divinity has been there.
