Field Day 2: Magadi 1 Lale-enok South Rift Resource Centre
Jen, Adinda, Juliana, Jackie, Laura, and I awoke early to catch the sunrise from the viewing tower. It was spectacular and what a great way to start the day! We then walked along the river back to camp and had a simple breakfast of hard boiled eggs, toast, fruit, and tea. We then walked over to the resource centre and set up for the camp. As we began setting up the local Maasai began to arrive either by walking or by piki piki bikes. The space is absolutely beautiful and provided the perfect amount of shade. Due to an error with the advertising of the medical camp we not only had women and children but men arrive for treatment. This led to making a strategic decision to treat everyone. It did however come with some tension as the men often don’t like to wait behind women and expected to be treated first. Our strong and fearless leader Adinda let her Dutch come out and set them straight and they either left or fell in line. I saw a number of patients who had been gored or rammed by cattle and/or buffalo. Can’t say that I see that as a common issue at home. Haha!
I also treated plenty of MSK, eye, and digestive issues. It felt like quite a busy day and surprisingly we had only treated 220 local Maasai residents. We showered, ate dinner and hit the tents early. Tomorrow is another new place out in the field.
