4 SAFETY TIPS FOR BRAVING THE COLD
The cool, crisp air. The crunch of fallen leaves or snow under your boots. The colder months are a great time to get outside. From skiing to snowshoeing, there are many activities to choose from. Plus, being outside can help boost your mood.
Of course, chilly temps mean you need to be prepared before heading outdoors. Cold-related emergencies can happen to anyone. Here are four cold weather safety tips to help you and your family stay active and healthy all winter long.
Hot Tips for Cold Weather
BE WEATHER READY
Check the forecast and dress like an onion. Layering up can help prevent cold-related emergencies. Start with a base layer. Next, add insulating layers and don’t forget to cover your neck and head. If the forecast calls for extreme bone-chilling temperatures, however, consider staying indoors.

PRACTICE ICE SAFETY
Keep an eye on the ice's colour. Clear blue is the “strongest” ice, while grey ice is not safe to stand on. If you want to walk, skate or snowmobile on ice, its thickness is just one consideration. Check with local authorities on ice conditions before venturing out.

ADJUST YOUR DRIVING
Adjust your speed to the weather conditions. Slippery or snow-covered roads and reduced visibility can make driving difficult and even dangerous. Avoid driving in bad weather whenever possible. The colder months also bring an increased risk of getting stuck in your vehicle, so be prepared.

HAVE A BACKUP PLAN
Put off non-essential outings when the weather is dicey. Winter storms can occur suddenly and last for days. Don’t be left in the cold; experts at the Canadian Red Cross recommend keeping an emergency kit with enough supplies to last three days.
