At the Gerald C. Baines Centre for Translational Cancer Research, science meets precision. Using column chromatography (a lab technique to separate mixtures), chemists purify compounds that can both highlight tumours and deliver targeted radiopharmaceutical therapy, turning a single discovery into a powerful tool to see and treat cancer. Breakthroughs like this are only possible thanks to donor support. You are helping fuel the research and innovation that is shaping the future of cancer care.

Meet Wendy. The impact of today.
For more than 25 years, Wendy has been part of London Health Sciences Centre (LHSC), working as a facilitator at the Verspeeten Family Cancer Centre and supporting patients and care teams every day. Alongside her role, she gives back as a dedicated volunteer with our Foundation, continuing a connection that began when she worked in LHSF's call centre, engaging donors in support of patient care.

Today, Wendy volunteers through initiatives like the Knights 50/50 and Channer's Mens Ladies Apparel Charity Fashion Show, and leads the annual Holiday Craft Sale with her partner Renee, raising more than $10,000 each year for the Blood and Marrow Transplant Patient Assistance Fund.

This week, we celebrate National Volunteer Week and reflect on 30 years of the Foundation. Throughout the week, we’ll share three perspectives on volunteering: past, present and future, and the people whose generosity has sparked our beginning, continues to fuel care today and will help ignite what is possible for generations to come.

Meet Kirk. A look at our past.
For decades, Kirk has helped shape the Foundation into what we see today. Through his leadership as a volunteer board member and his unwavering support of cancer research, his impact reaches far beyond any one moment, touching patients, families and care teams here in London and around the world.

Kirk Baines and his family have generously helped advance groundbreaking research, attract leading scientists and build critical infrastructure like the Baines Centre and Cancer Biospecimen Lab. Because of this, patients have greater access to innovative treatments, and hope continues to grow where it is needed most.

Kirk represents the power of volunteering to create lasting change. What began as a spark years ago continues to ignite progress, possibility and better outcomes for those who need it most.

For over a year, “Betty” followed Annette Desjardins everywhere. It started with exhaustion, bloating and pain, eventually leading to a stage four ovarian cancer diagnosis.

At London Health Sciences Centre (LHSC), Dr. Akira Sugimoto guided her through her treatment options, from chemotherapy to major surgery. Annette remains grateful to Dr. Sugimoto and her entire care team for making her feel like she was the only one there.

Today, she is cancer-free and appreciating the little things. She recently partnered with A1 Chiropractic Health & Wellness Exeter to organize Spin for a Cause, raising funds for ovarian cancer research.

Last February, I learned that I had breast cancer and my life changed instantly.

During treatment, I found unexpected comfort in painting and inspiration in a service dog I met along the way. I was also deeply grateful for the incredible care I received at the Verspeeten Family Cancer Centre (VFCC) and the support of family and friends. This led me to think of ways I could help others and give back. I started selling cards featuring my watercolour paintings, with a portion of the proceeds going to the VFCC.
