Kwanzaa is a week-long cultural celebration observed from December 26th – January 1st, honoring the heritage, unity, and culture of people of African descent.
This annual, non-religious celebration centers on African American values of family, community, and collective responsibility. Traditions include songs, dance, storytelling, poetry, drumming, and a festive communal feast called Karamu on December 31st.
Key symbols are displayed on a Mkeka (straw mat), including the Kinara with its seven candles (Mishumaa Saba), Mazao (crops), Muhindi (corn), Kikombe cha Umoja (unity cup), and Zawadi (gifts). The colors black, red, and green represent the people, their struggle, and hope for the future.
