ATTENTION & IRON DEFICIENCY⁣

If a child is having problems with attention and focus PLUS some symptoms like:⁣

🧩poor appetite;⁣
🧩pale skin;⁣
🧩fatigue;⁣
🧩poor growth & development;⁣
🧩dizzy when standing;⁣
🧩decreased energy;⁣
🧩frequent infections;⁣
🧩or eating non food items:⁣

it could indicate an Iron Deficiency⁣.

Iron is key for carrying oxygen around their little bodies. Their muscles function, tone and endurance are dependent on iron as well. It’s a pretty big deal.⁣

We know that iron is important for our kids and a deficiency can impact or contribute to:⁣

👉impaired growth⁣
👉learning and behaviour⁣
👉social withdrawal⁣
👉delayed motor skills⁣
👉muscle weakness⁣

So as parents we want to make sure our child is getting enough of it. BUT that doesn’t mean we should use a ‘just in case’ approach to giving iron supplements. Giving too much iron can cause serious side effects if not monitored.⁣

If a low iron diet and deficiency is suspected, a visit with a paediatrician and paediatric dietitian is key. They will analyze their diet and look for any signs and symptoms of iron deficiency.⁣

If a supplement is suggested, follow the directions closely and continue to be followed by the health professional so they can monitor iron status.⁣

An iron supplement geared towards children is generally low in dosage so for the vast majority is safe to take BUT its is always good practice to chat with a professional about it.

HAVE YOU HAD VITAMIN D CHECKED?

Vitamin D is critical for EVERY brain function and body system!⁣

It’s a hormone found in every tissue of the body, ⁣

Kids need it for:⁣

👉immune system support⁣
👉brain development⁣
👉neurotransmitter function⁣

Because it plays such an important role in immune function and regulation of mood, low levels can cause or make mood and behaviour problems worse.⁣

Problems like:⁣
👉increased anxiety and depression⁣
👉learning difficulties⁣
👉problems with focus and attention⁣
👉increased aggression⁣

Who is at risk for Vitamin D deficiency?⁣

Children who:⁣
👉do not get adequate sun exposure⁣ (without sunscreen for short periods)
👉have darker skin pigmentation⁣
👉take certain prescription medications⁣
👉actually..pretty much every child no matter what they eat as food has very little vitamin D available.

We see many children with confirmed vitamin D deficiency even when parents thought levels would be fine. It’s a sneaky deficiency but one that if we pay attention to can be improved quite easily.
