Active Minds Western

Active Minds Western Active Minds' mission is to reduce the stigma that surrounds mental illness and to create an open environment for the discussion of mental health issues.

Our aim is to raise awareness and spark meaningful conversations about mental health. By fighting the stigma that surrounds mental illness, our hope is that individuals will become better educated and more comfortable with their own mental health. Through a variety of on and off campus events, we build a community of passionate individuals within the club and collectively raise awareness among Western University students.
..also we have a lot of fun :)

Many of the mental health resources available at Western do not consider the unique circumstances of students, especially regarding marginalized folks and international students. Active Minds Western is conducting a survey to try and identify gaps within mental health resources. Please fill out the survey using the Linktree and help us change the conversation. It will only take a moment, but it will make a difference.

One is nine men will experience depression. One is five men experience anxiety is some way in their life. Look around, that man might not be so far.

It is that time of the year again. We are looking for men who might be interested in contributing to our annual Men for Mental Health campaign. Often, men don’t feel comfortable speaking out about their mental health. We hope to work towards changing that. Please send us a DM and we will arrange for you a place on this platform by sharing a post with your story. Let’s get the conversation going gentleman 💙💙💙

As our campus community prepares to vote today and tomorrow, Active Minds Western wanted to outline what we think are the most important platform points that any USC elections candidate can have as a tool to help carefully evaluate platforms and make a decision. Please note that we are in no way endorsing any one candidate. We believe in casting an educated vote, and while there are many other areas addressed by each candidate, we encourage students to consider the impact of strong advocacy for mental health and wellness on campus.

Reminder to vote today and tomorrow here: www.westernusc.simplyvoting.com . Voting closes Friday at 8pm. Exercise your right to vote!

"When I think about self-love, I think about how I check in and support my friends and family when they're struggling with their mental health, and try to treat myself with the same regard. Everyone's heard of the phrase 'treat others the way you would like to be treated', but we forget that we don't necessarily have to neglect ourselves in order to show compassion and care towards others.

To me, self-love looks like understanding and validating my feelings, and giving myself the chance to process them so I can understand my own needs. Sometimes, that's just putting on some music and painting by myself. As much as your friends and family will always be there for you, you have to be there for yourself as well!" -Nathalie Prenevost

“I find it so easy to be overwhelmed these days, when the world is constantly changing and everything gets updated on social media. A lot of the time I feel like I’m lagging behind, when my friends are out there doing stuff and I’m just here.
One thing that I keep telling myself is “it doesn’t matter where you start, it matters that you start”. On days when I’m too mentally fatigued to do anything, I would begin with something small and simple, like playing some happy music, having a little stretch, making myself a cup of tea, or folding my piled up clothes. Remember, anything counts — simply managing to get out of bed is still a good start!” -Cat Tien Ho

“After being invited to take part in this campaign, I spent a few days wondering whether or not I was cut out to talk about self-love. I thought about discussing the fact that I love to paint my nails, crochet, go for runs and take pretty pictures, but the reality is that I haven’t done those things for myself in a long time. I’ve admittedly been feeling down, and while I can’t bring myself to do my usual self-love activities, I have learned a new way to love myself. And that is by being patient.

I am learning to be more patient and gentle with myself while understanding that self-love can take many different forms. Sometimes it does look like exploring creative outlets and doing yoga and trying new things, but other times it looks like getting out of bed, cutting yourself some slack, and taking a break. And both are OK. Self-love looks different for everybody, and can look different for yourself at different points in your life. Check in with yourself, be patient, be gentle, be understanding, and treat yourself like you would treat your close friends. And when you figure out what you need to do to feel your best, honour that, and give yourself credit!

Today’s acts of self love included treating myself to coffee, seeing a friend, and realizing that I am indeed cut out to take part in this campaign. And that’s something to be proud of.” -Samantha Lim
