Nobody wants to wake a sleeping baby! I know it feels counterintuitive, but there are some instances that I recommend gently waking your child from their slumber.

Until your baby has dropped down to one nap, you will want to WAKE them up if they have been napping for 2 hours.

2+ naps a day= 2hr max/nap

WHY!?

Have you ever taken a long nap in and woken up in a haze? You feel kinda groggy and out of it. This can happen for our babes too! But the main reason is so that you don’t mess up the rest of your days schedule.

If your child is taking a 3 hour nap in the morning, you are going to struggle with scheduling the remainder of your day. It will be more difficult to fit in all your naps and make it to bedtime, without going over your maximum nap total.

I know, it sounds backwards… but hear me out!!πŸ‘‡

The biggest cause of early mornings wakings is OVERtiredness. So the seemingly logical approach of pushing bedtime later usually heeds unwanted results. Pushing bedtime later only contributes to more OVERtiredness, so sometimes they wake up even earlier!!

So what do we do instead? Move bedtime EARLIER! Shift bedtime by 10-15 minutes, in hopes of preventing overtiredness. This should result in a much better night overall, and a later wake up the next day! πŸ’€πŸ’€

β€œWitching Hour” is very common for newborns! πŸ§™

This term refers to the late evening hours where many 0-3 month old babies get extremely fussy! I have some tips on how to help calm them, so you don’t lose all your hair (that comes later with the postpartum hair loss lol!)

πŸ‘Strap that baby to your chest and get moving! Newborns love feeling safe, cozy and close to you! The motion will also help them settle into sleep, snd you get your hands back!

πŸ‘White noise is a powerful tool. You can use a machine or just shush them. This sound is mimicking what they heard in the womb, your blood rushing through your body! Isn’t that so cool?!

πŸ‘Use the art of distraction! A warm, calm bath could do the trick, and help them get a little more sleepy πŸ₯±

πŸ‘The 5 S’s is a comforting technique for newborns that is seriously like magic! Head to the link in my bio and watch my video β€œtechnique to calm a newborn”

πŸ‘Feed them! Often the witching hour also involves cluster feeding. Newborns do this to fill their bellies up before sleep, it’s normal 😊

πŸ‘Be sure that you’re in a calm environment. Dim the lights, turn off the tv and reduce noise that could be hindering sleep.

Don’t forget to be kind to yourself β™₯️ These moments can be some of the most frustrating ones! If you ever feel overwhelmed, place your baby in a safe place take a moment to step away. Take a deep breath and remind yourself that this too shall pass β™₯️

Which will you choose?!

If you are feeling nervous about the time change on Nov 2, you might want to use Option 1! Start shifting bedtime later this week, prior to the time change.
I’ve always been more of a β€œrip the bandaid” kinda gal, so we opt for Option 2!
