What people think I do vs. what I actually do as a naturopathic doctor 👀

Spoiler: I don’t wear crystals, push detoxes, or tell you to throw out your meds. I use lab testing, evidence-based protocols, and work WITH your healthcare team to address root causes.

Here’s the truth: naturopathic medicine isn’t about choosing herbs over science. It’s about using ALL the tools (yes, including conventional medicine when needed) to support your body in a personalized, sustainable way.

Period cramps don’t have to sideline your day.

Here’s my go-to protocol as an Naturopathic Doctor when cramps hit:

🩷 Heat therapy (heating pad or warm bath) to relax uterine muscles
🩷 Magnesium glycinate to ease muscle tension
🩷 Gentle movement (walking, stretching) to improve circulation
🩷 Anti-inflammatory support like ginger tea or omega-3s
🩷 Hydration and rest when your body asks for it

These work WITH your body’s natural processes to address what’s actually causing the pain.

If your cramps are debilitating or interfering with daily life, that’s worth investigating further. You deserve care that gets to the root cause, not just “take ibuprofen and deal with it.”

“So you’re anti-medication, right?”
“Do you just prescribe supplements?”
“I bet you put everyone on restrictive diets.”

I’ve heard it all.

But here’s the truth:
I’m here to work with your existing healthcare team, ask the questions that don’t always get asked, and dig into the root causes behind your symptoms.

I believe in personalized, evidence-based care that fits your life and honors your body exactly as it is.

And I don’t believe painful periods, exhausting PMS, or feeling off are just “part of being a woman.” Those symptoms deserve support. You deserve to be heard.

Naturopathic medicine is about understanding the full picture and using the most appropriate tools to support your health.

Sometimes that includes medication.
Sometimes it is lifestyle, nutrition, or hormone support.
Most of the time, it is a combination.

The goal is not to replace conventional care. It is to complement it and create a more comprehensive, personalized approach.

Save this if you have ever been curious about naturopathic care, and share it with someone who might need a different approach to their health. 🩷

Your hormone health evolves through every season of life.

The priorities in your 20s are not the same as in your 40s or 50s, and that is completely normal!

Each stage of life brings different hormonal shifts and even different life changes; which means the way you support your body should change too.

Understanding what is happening in each era can help you work with your hormones and your body rather than feeling like your body is working against you, which is exactly how we approach your overall health in naturopathic medicine. 🩷

Episode 8 | Dr. Em talks menopause

I’ve been seeing a lot of conversation around testosterone for women’s libido, especially on social media, so let’s talk about it.

While testosterone can play a role in sexual health, it is not well studied or approved for this use in women in Canada. This means we do not have strong, consistent evidence or standardized guidelines to support its routine use.

Low libido during perimenopause and menopause is rarely caused by one single hormone. Sleep, stress, relationship dynamics, vaginal health, estrogen levels, and overall well-being all play a role.

Because of this, my approach is to look at the full picture first and focus on the areas we know are well researched and effective.

Hormone therapy is not one size fits all, and neither is libido.

Follow along as we talk symptoms, hormones, and the support available to help you feel like yourself again. 🩷

Reflecting on spending this past week in Mexico ☀️🌊✈️

Stepping away from your routine while on vacation does not undo your health progress!

While I’m on vacation, I focus on a few simple habits that help me feel good, and let go of any stress around the rest. Sometimes the most supportive thing for your hormones, energy, and nervous system is rest and a change of pace, which happens when we go away on vacation.
