I have been trying to find the words to put this together for days now. Trying so hard to understand the range of emotions that are currently flowing through my soul. The pearl of the Caribbean is on the streets. Cubans are taking their power back after 60 years and this is a historical moment for us and for all the oppressed people of the world.

On July 11th, 2021, Cubans decided that enough was enough. Tired of the despair, the misery, the lack of resources, and the constant oppression from the government, they took the streets. And Cubans all over the world also took the streets to raise the voices of our people back home.

My story is no different than the stories of most Cubans that have fled the island. It’s as if we were cursed from the day we were born to either endure a life of misery and oppression or fleet. We move to lands far from ours in search of freedom. We learn to speak new languages and adapt to new cultures. We leave our families behind or find them scattered all through the world, all in the name of freedom. And I know this is the story for many other humans from oppressed societies, too!

These last few days have been so triggering for our community worldwide. Some of us feel guilt and impotency for not being able to do more. Some of us have finally began to feel hope that our Cuba will be free before our eyes. Some of us are afraid for our families and friends back home. And most of us are feeling all these emotions and more in waves or at once.

Cuba is finding it’s voice for the first time in over 60 years. This is not the time to be silent or ignore the situation. This is the time to raise the voices that have been silenced for over 60 years.

Please, keep educating yourself on the subject.
Please, do not gaslight us with your “knowledge” of history or politics from the eyes of a free being residing in a free country.
It is very easy to be a communist in a free country but it is not possible to be a free being in a communist country.
