Did you know that people of African heritage have a higher chance of developing heart disease and stroke?

According to Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada, high blood pressure (hypertension) and diabetes can develop at younger ages in Black communities – increasing their chance of heart disease and stroke.

This Black History Month, we are raising awareness about how ethnicity can impact heart health❤️.

Protect your heart by getting regular blood pressure checks✔️, eating a balanced diet, staying physically active and managing stress.

Speak with a healthcare provider about your risk. Small steps can make a big difference!

This week is Sexual Health Week (February 8-14). The theme this year is exploring sexual health + artificial intelligence.

In the age of AI, it is easy to find misleading information about sexual health online. According to Action Canada for Sexual Health and Rights, some chatbots only give accurate answers about sexual health 64% of the time!

To ensure that you are getting accurate information about sexual health, speak with a healthcare provider or get trustworthy information from York Region’s Sexual Health Services.

Our Community Care Team can also help with your sexual health needs and offers services such as pessary care, IUD insertion, and HPV testing. You can have your healthcare provider refer to this service or you can self-refer by calling 289-859-1300.

Nearly one million people in Canada could be living with dementia by 2030.

January is 🌼- a time to learn more and challenge common misconceptions. Dementia is not a single disease; it’s a term used to describe a group of symptoms caused by disorders that affect the brain. Alzheimer’s disease is the most common type of dementia and gradually affects memory, thinking, and the ability to carry out everyday activities.

While dementia presents real challenges, many people can continue to live well and maintain their quality of life for a meaningful period of time with the right support and understanding.

This month, take time to get informed 📖 about dementia and Alzheimer’s disease by visiting: https://ow.ly/4PjW50Y3n90

January is Cervical Cancer Awareness Month!

Let this month be a reminder to stay up to date with your screening tests if you have a cervix, are 25 to 70 years old and have been sexually active. Regular screening helps to find cervical cancer early.

In Ontario, the HPV test has replaced the Pap test because most cervical cancers develop from an HPV infection. Talk to your health care provider to get informed and to book your screening test.

Alcohol is linked to over 60 medical conditions, including cancer, diabetes, depression and high blood pressure.

Take this Dry January Month as a time to reset and look at how you use alcohol. People that reduce or cut down their alcohol use during this month have seen improved health benefits such as better sleep and an increase in energy! This January challenge yourself to cut out or reduce the amount of alcohol you drink. The harms of alcohol are on a continuum - this means the less you drink, the lower your chance for negative health outcomes.

Today is Blue Monday! ‘Blue Monday’ is a day that is recognized as the “saddest day of the year.” During this time, people may experience a short period where their mood and energy are low. It is often associated with Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), a type of depression linked to seasonal changes (most commonly in winter❄️).

Use this day as a reminder to take care of your mental health and practice self-care🩵. Being physically active, spending time outside in the day, developing good sleep routine and connecting with friends and family are great ways to practice self-care. When needed, seek professional help. The Community Care Team offers free mental health support. Call 289-859-1300 to book an appointment.
