As the first Integrated Community Health Service Centre in Ontario to join Clinical Trials Ontario, our sites can now further our role in modelling the future of healthcare through the lens of clinical trials.

The first clinical trial we will be participating in under this new streamlined process is the Dial-Bicarb trial. Our DMC sites will be helping to determine if providing a lower versus higher concentration of dialysate bicarbonate (32 versus 38 mmol/L) alters the risk of outcomes important to patients and their care providers in hemodialysis (HD) centers across Ontario.

The lead investigators for the trial are Dr. Amber Molnar at St. Joesph’s Healthcare Hamilton, and Dr. Samuel Silver at Queen’s University. Our local principal investigator at DMC is Dr. Robert Ting.

The Dial-Bicarb Trial is a study that aims to discover what is the best hemodialysis fluid bicarbonate concentration to improve outcomes.

Collectively we can always accomplish more for patients and families. It's why we are excited to announce that this January we have launched new partnership initiatives that will transition two more regional renal programs to onsite rounding at DMC.

These initiatives include Mackenzie Health beginning on-site physician rounds for their patients at our Markham DMC site and Lakeridge Health re-starting onsite allied health rounds for their patients at our Pickering DMC site. The launch of these initiatives draws from the long-standing successes we have had with other regional renal programs that provide onsite services to their patients at DMC.

With the launch of these partnerships, all our primary regional renal programs, Scarborough Health Network, Peterborough Regional Health Centre, Lakeridge Health and Mackenzie Health, now offer on-site supports to their patients dialyzing at DMC.

Thank you to our partner hospital programs for helping to keep care closer to home, avoid patient travel to appointments, and most importantly, assist in leveraging the collective intelligence of our teams to strengthen the care for our shared patients.

A happy Friday indeed!

Today we celebrated our first in person multidisciplinary rounds at DMC Markham.

Kudos to the Nephrology team at the Scarborough Health Network (SHN), for also being the first program to allocate dedicated onsite renal dietary support for all their patients dialyzing at DMC.

In the picture, from left to right is Erik (SHN Renal Dietitian assigned to DMC), Marianne (DMC Team Leader - RN) and Dr. Ting (SHN Nephrologist and DMC Markham Medical Director).

And, to mark the occasion we had cupcakes and cake. Though to be fair, that was to celebrate a special birthday, as what better way to spend a birthday than with your team at DMC. 😉

Exciting news for our community! 👋

Starting Monday, DMC Markham is proud to welcome Mackenzie Health’s Kidney Care Team to our building at 7300 Warden Ave.

With the launch of their new General Nephrology, Multi-Kidney Care, Glomerulonephritis, and Diabetes clinics, patients connected to the Mackenzie Health program, including many of our own DMC patients, will benefit from improved access to their care team, closer to home.

This milestone is a testament to the shared vision, collaboration, and trust between our teams. It’s one of a number of examples of how collaborating with our various regional renal programs continue to elevate care and be a positive force for change in our system.

A sincere thank you to everyone who contributed to bringing this project to life.

Looking forward to an exciting first day on Monday!
