Proper breathing is slow, deep and rhythmic. Deep means that the initial movement is from the abdomen. When you breathe, the movement starts in the low abdomen and then moves up to the chest.

โžก๏ธ To check your breathing, put one hand on your low abdomen and one on your chest and take a deep breath.

โค๏ธ Heartburn, or gastroesophageal reflux disease, is common after the holidays.

โค๏ธ The most common symptom of heartburn is burning pain in the upper abdomen or chest that is worse with bending or stooping, lying down or eating. It can also manifest as gas and bloating, belching, nausea or vomiting, bitter taste in the mouth, coughing, difficulty swallowing, hiccups, hoarseness or sore throat.

โœ…Relax while consuming food: always sit down, eat meals slowly & deliberately, avoid doing other activities simultaneously.
โœ… Eat smaller, more frequent meals with low fat content.
โœ… Increase dietary fiber intake.
โœ… Address the dietary factors that are triggering or aggravating the symptoms. Limit: alcohol, spicy & fatty foods, chocolate, citrus foods & juices, coffee & carbonated drinks.
โœ… Engage in regular exercise or movement.
โœ… Ensure you drink adequate water, but not while eating.
โœ… Address any postural issues. Standing & sitting up straight provides more room in the abdomen.
โœ… Learn how to breathe into the abdomen & back versus into the chest.

๐ŸŒŠ Ensuring regular hydration is an important aspect of immune health, which is the system that protects us from colds & flus.

The following tips can help ensure adequate hydration:

๐Ÿซ— Water. Drink about 1/2 your body weight in ounces a day.
๐Ÿซ— Herbal non-caffeinated teas are a great alternative. There are a number of herbal teas that also support immune & respiratory health (speak to your Naturopathic Doctor).

๐Ÿต This winter and holiday season consider making warm dishes with winter vegetables that are easier on digestion in the cold months (vs a cold salad, which is harder to digest during the winter).

โ“ Ever wonder what the Naturopathic treatment process looks like?

๐Ÿฉบ Here is a flow chart that helps depict some of what your Naturopathic Doctor is thinking in the appointment.

๐Ÿฉบ First the Naturopathic Doctor assesses and diagnoses, and then considers at what point is the concern, acute vs chronic. Other factors of health are evaluated alongside the constitution of the patient. Then naturopathic therapy options are reviewed, while considering the whole person, to build an individualized treatment plan.

๐ŸŒฟ If you feel sadness, anger, frustration or disappointment, it is important to find a way to express those emotions safely. It doesn't mean that you have to stay in that emotional state for a long time, but you need to find time when you can truly express how you feel.

๐ŸŒฟ Many physical symptoms arise because emotions are suppressed or held-in, not because they are felt.

๐Ÿ“š Reflection:
โœ๏ธ Have you looked at the โ€œtruthโ€ of your emotions?
โœ๏ธ Have you stopped to reflect on how much your psychological state influences your health?
โœ๏ธ What can you do today to help support your psychological health?

๐ŸŒŠ Staying hydrated in the cooler months can be tricky as we donโ€™t usually feel like a big glass of cold water. It is important to stay hydrated to support the immune system, avoid dry skin, and help maintain energy levels among other functions of the body.

๐ŸŒŠ So how can you make sure you are drinking enough, even when you donโ€™t want water in the fall and winter? Read the slides and let us know which is your favourite!

๐ŸŒŠ Reminder, drink about 1/2 your body weight in ounces a day.

๐Ÿ‚ โ€œThe climate changes rapidly in autumn and changing your eating pattern to match the season is the key to health. In autumn, due to the rapid changes in temperature and climate, many people find that their physical ailments are aggravated. Changing your diet so that it is more suited to the changes in temperature can help to prevent many symptoms.

๐Ÿ‚ The autumn diet regimen should avoid cold foods such as raw salad, cold drinks and food directly from the fridge. It is also important to avoid a lot of dry food and fried foods. Warm foods, like soup or porridge, are the better choice in the fall.โ€
