Throwback to 1991 💭 Small space. Big heart.💙💜🧡

The Centre for Dreams may have started in a small space, but it was built on something much bigger. From the very beginning, the program was rooted in heart, family, and a deep sense of care. Early members had a place where they could learn, be themselves, and grow in a supportive and welcoming environment.

That feeling of love and belonging was woven into the fabric of the program from day one, and it’s a feeling that still lives on in our modern-day programs. While our spaces and offerings have grown, the heart behind Dreams remains the same, creating a place where everyone feels at home.

Throwback to 1991 đź’ The Dream Takes Shape

As the Centre for Dreams began to grow, so did the vision. Early on, structured programming became a cornerstone of the program, with members learning practical, functional skills they could take with them into their everyday lives and communities. These weren’t just activities, they were tools for independence, confidence, and connection.

That same approach continues to guide us today. While our programs have evolved over the years, the heart of structured, purposeful, and meaningful learning is still woven into everything we do. It’s a reminder that the foundation laid in those early days continues to shape Dreams, 35 years later. 💙🧡💜

Yesterday at the Centre for Dreams, our members took part in a special “Day at the Doctors” program led by U of T medical student Alicia and TMU nursing students Hina and Kevin. 🩺🩻 Members learned about medical professionals and first responders and how they support our community through a morning of guided learning and hands on role play.

Participants completed a full doctor’s visit simulation, including booking an appointment with a receptionist, spending time in a waiting room, and meeting with the doctor for a checkup. They were introduced to common medical tools and equipment such as stethoscopes, blood pressure monitors, and thermometers, with clear explanations and support at every step.

The goal of the program was to reduce fear and stigma around medical visits by making the experience familiar and approachable. Through this interactive format, members built knowledge, confidence, and comfort. đź’™ Thank you to Alicia, Hina, and Kevin for creating and leading this meaningful learning experience for our Dreams community.

Throwback to 1991 đź’

This is where it all began. These photos take us back to the very start of the Centre for Dreams, inside our founder’s family home, where the program first opened its doors. With a small group of original members and a whole lot of heart, those early days were built on connection, care, and the belief that everyone deserves a place to belong.

What started in a home has grown into a community, but the spirit behind it remains the same. We’re proud of how far we’ve come and grateful for the roots that shaped who we are today. 💙

It’s our first Member Monday of the year, and we’re excited to spotlight Christine. 💙🎹

Christine has been part of the Dreams family for three and a half years and brings great energy to our daily programming. She is always ready to take part, try new activities, and connect with others.

One of her standout talents is music. Christine plays the piano beautifully and never fails to impress staff and fellow members with her skill and confidence at the keys. A true Dreams virtuoso.

We’re lucky to have you with us, Christine. Keep sharing your talent and love of music with all of us. ✨

Our first “Thankful Thursday” Post begins with recognition where it is earned.

Today we are highlighting Kyle Welton, owner of Welton Motion, and a long-standing supporter of The Centre for Dreams, our members, and the developmental disability community.

Kyle has built a career both in front of and behind the camera as an actor, writer, and director. He currently works with high-level brands, creating many of the commercials seen on television today. His professional skill is matched by a genuine respect for the people and stories he works with.

Many will recognize Kyle’s work from the relaunch video of our Beyond the Label campaign several years ago. For that project, he fully donated all resources and time to the shoot, assembling a complete professional production team that included makeup artists, wardrobe, lighting, professional camera operators, and high-level equipment to bring the vision to life exactly as intended. During the project, he worked directly alongside our members and staff, taking the time to truly get to know the many personalities that make our community what it is. He did not treat the work as a transaction, he engaged fully and came away with a deep appreciation for the Centre for Dreams mission and of course the amazing members we support.

Beyond the camera, Kyle’s support is consistent and tangible. He has been a hole sponsor at our annual Golf Classic, a dedicated participant in Gift Card Survivor, and a steady presence in our fundraising efforts, offering support whenever and however it is needed.

We extend a sincere thank you to Kyle Welton for his continued commitment to The Centre for Dreams, our members, and the broader developmental disability community. His actions reflect what it truly means to live beyond the label and support others in achieving their dreams.

💬 Bell Let’s Talk reminds us that mental health conversations must include everyone.

At The Centre for Dreams, we recognize that individuals in the intellectual and developmental disability community are often overlooked in mental health discussions. Dual diagnoses—living with both a developmental disability and a mental health challenge—are prevalent, yet many voices go unheard.

Today, we stand for inclusion, understanding, and compassion. Mental health does not discriminate, and support should never be limited by labels. By listening and creating safe spaces, we can ensure everyone has a voice.

Let’s give everyone a voice. Let’s talk. 💙🧡💜
