Happy Social Work Week! From March 2-8, we celebrate the vital work of social workers at Oak Valley Health. From emergency care to inpatient units, outpatient clinics to mental health settings, and beyond, social workers bring compassion, advocacy, and clinical insight to every space they serve. Oak Valley Health social workers support patients, families, and care teams during life’s most challenging moments.

The theme of this year's Social Work Week is: “When care and insight come together, change happens.” This theme reflects the heart of hospital social work: whole-person care that creates meaningful, lasting impact.

February marks Black History Month — a time to honour the experiences, achievements, and lasting contributions of Black Canadians across Oak Valley Health, our communities, and our nation.

Led by the newly renamed Black Collaborative Network (BCN), formerly the Network for Black Employees (NBE), our staff, professional staff, and volunteers had the opportunity to participate in several meaningful activities:

▪️ Pan-African flag raising to kick off the month
▪️ Grand rounds with guest speaker Dr. Jacob Pendergrast, sickle cell disease specialist. 💊
▪️ A Black-owned market showcasing local businesses. 🛒
▪️ A lunch and learn featuring Allison Needham, Director, Anti-Racism, Equity and Social Accountability at Unity Health Toronto 🥪📚

Beyond Black History Month, OVH is committed to challenging harmful narratives, deepening our understanding, and taking action to advance equity, inclusion, and the dismantling of anti-Black racism.

Paul Husbands is one of our Stockless Inventory Attendants. Paul is also a member of Oak Valley Health’s Black Collaborative Network (BCN), formerly the Network for Black Employees (NBE). The BCN is a voluntary group that amplifies Black voices and focuses on matters pertinent to staff, physicians, volunteers, and other partners within Black communities across Oak Valley Health and beyond.

"It’s been a wonderful experience to speak with other members of the BCN, learn about different cultural experiences, and reflect on our history,” says Paul. “I find the BCN to be very informative and inspirational, and I would recommend joining. It’s nice to be part of creating a community where we can learn from each other.”

While vacationing in the Bahamas with his family, Dr. Henry Solow, a 35-year veteran haematologist-oncologist at Markham Stouffville Hospital, experienced a sudden cardiac arrest. After being rushed to a nearby hospital, Dr. Solow ended up at Markham Stouffville Hospital by air ambulance shortly after.

“Going from doctor to patient to doctor was nothing,” Dr. Solow insists. “I was just touched, because half the hospital came to see me: doctors, nurses from my clinic and other wards, lab staff. It was nothing short of exceptional.”

After his recovery, Dr. Solow returned to work one month later.
