Paul Husbands is one of our Stockless Inventory Attendants. Paul is also a member of Oak Valley Health’s Black Collaborative Network (BCN), formerly the Network for Black Employees (NBE). The BCN is a voluntary group that amplifies Black voices and focuses on matters pertinent to staff, physicians, volunteers, and other partners within Black communities across Oak Valley Health and beyond.

"It’s been a wonderful experience to speak with other members of the BCN, learn about different cultural experiences, and reflect on our history,” says Paul. “I find the BCN to be very informative and inspirational, and I would recommend joining. It’s nice to be part of creating a community where we can learn from each other.”

While vacationing in the Bahamas with his family, Dr. Henry Solow, a 35-year veteran haematologist-oncologist at Markham Stouffville Hospital, experienced a sudden cardiac arrest. After being rushed to a nearby hospital, Dr. Solow ended up at Markham Stouffville Hospital by air ambulance shortly after.

“Going from doctor to patient to doctor was nothing,” Dr. Solow insists. “I was just touched, because half the hospital came to see me: doctors, nurses from my clinic and other wards, lab staff. It was nothing short of exceptional.”

After his recovery, Dr. Solow returned to work one month later.

Were you inspired by the athletes at the Milan Cortina Olympics? 🏅❄️

From record-breaking feats to stories of resilience, the Olympics show what’s possible when we prioritize health. But you don’t need to be an Olympian to live well. A preventative approach — including regular exercise — can help build strength, mobility, and longevity.

“Olympic athletes inspire us to be active,” says Dr. James Carson, a family physician specializing in sport and exercise medicine. “We may never ski or skate as fast as they do, but maintaining consistent exercise habits is key to long-term health.”

Exercise supports both performance and everyday wellbeing. Regular movement helps people stay strong, mobile, and independent throughout life.

Activity doesn’t need to be extreme — walking, gardening, gym workouts, or trying something new all count. The goal is simple: move and maintain.

Happy Family Day!

Blending home and hospital has always come naturally to the Lougheed family. In 1982, when Dr. Eileen Lougheed was a young mother, she set up a full‑service medical clinic in the basement of their Unionville home. Her children would walk back from school for lunch, wander into the clinic after class, and occasionally help with small tasks — medicine was simply part of everyday life.

A decade later, in 1992, Dr. Eileen moved her practice to Markham Stouffville Hospital, where she also helped establish palliative care. Today, her children are no strangers to either the field of medicine or the hospital. Dr. Daryl and Dr. Justan Lougheed — carry on her commitment to compassionate care.

Their family reminds us that care is more than a profession — it’s something we pass down, nurture, and share.

Oak Valley Health’s new chemical analyzers are delivering high-quality results while significantly streamlining laboratory workflows. 🔬

At Markham Stouffville Hospital alone, the analyzer can complete up to 450 tests per hour 🚀 — an incredible advantage for a lab that completes more than 2.5 million chemistry and immunoassay tests annually. 📊

“The systems offer precision, reliability, and faster operation,” says Dr. Golnar Rasty, Chief of the Department of Laboratory Medicine. “Fully automated, they produce highly sensitive results consistently and in less time. When we maximize the information from every blood sample, we can detect issues earlier and respond to patient needs sooner.”
