Cirrhosis happens when long-term inflammation leads to permanent scarring in the liver, making it harder for this vital organ to perform its 500+ daily functions. There are two stages, compensated and decompensated cirrhosis. Compensated cirrhosis is when the liver is damaged but still working, similar to a device running on low battery. Decompensated cirrhosis is when the liver can no longer function properly, like having no battery left.
The good news: you can take steps to help prevent cirrhosis or slow its progression. Avoiding alcohol, following a balanced meal pattern, getting enough exercise, managing conditions like hepatitis, and using medications safely are key measures to protect your liver health.
It is important to stay on top of your liver health by getting regular checkups to catch conditions like cirrhosis, or any changes in your liver health early.
