Urgent call to find a living liver donor to save a fellow citizen and healthcare provider in Toronto. Consider giving the gift of life. Blood type O.
I would like to ask our friends, neighbors and any kind soul out there to spend a few minutes to read and share this post as someone so dear to us is fighting for his life. Last July, my 53 year-old uncle in Toronto was diagnosed with non-alcoholic cirrhosis of the liver (NASH). In simple terms, his liver is failing him! The always smiling pharmacist that everyone adores is now laying in bed most days, struggling with severe fatigue and other serious complications. His health is declining every day, and his only chance to survive is a liver transplant. But getting a liver from a deceased donor means waiting for months on the list and hoping to receive a liver before it's too late. Being an O blood type reduces his odds even further.
But, there's another way, a much simpler way and that is a liver transplant through a living donor. Liver is the only organ capable of regrowing and regenerating itself. As a living-donor, a portion of the healthy liver is donated to the recipient and in a few weeks the donor's liver regenerates back to normal. And the life of the recipient is saved with a gift of a new liver.
Many don't know or are not familiar with the living donor process and how easy and low risk it can be done. By being a living donor, not only one would save the life of the recipient, but also free up a spot on the waiting list for someone else. Our kind and caring friends and family have come forward to be a living donor for my uncle but we could not find someone with the matching criteria. The general criteria of a suitable donor for him include:
- between 16 and 60 years of age;
- blood type O;
- free from significant organ diseases (i.e., heart, liver, lung, kidney disease), ongoing malignancy (cancer), Hepatitis
My heart is heavy but hopeful that we will receive a call soon from a generous donor. That my uncle will be well again to be with his family and back to work with his patients. That his mother will smile again and will have her son back in her arms healthy and well.
I have included some links below if you want more information on being a donor. You can also send me an email, call, text or even meet in person if you have any questions. My contact information is:
