We all carry things from childhood into adulthood.
Some are helpful.
Some are just old pop tabs in a bread bag.

In therapy we tend to come in wanting relief from today’s pain. But often…like a good massage…healing is found when we start with the root of the tension.

Therapy skill 47: disguising a yawn without breaking eye contact.

I promise I’m not bored…just human. The yawn always has terrible timing and zero respect for professionalism.

We all just trying to figure it out😂

Sometimes the feeling of being lost doesn’t come from building the wrong life. It comes from never pausing long enough to ask who you are inside the life you’ve built.

Therapists may ask the same question twice, but we’re rarely asking the same thing.

Which one do you think I went with?😅

Therapy is like cleaning a pool.

Over time, dirt settles at the bottom. The water may look clear on the surface, but that doesn’t mean it’s clean or safe to swim in.

To truly clear it, you have to get in and stir up what’s been sitting there. When you do, the water turns cloudy. It can look worse before it looks better.

The same thing happens in therapy. As we begin to gently access old experiences, your nervous system can become activated. Emotions may feel stronger. Old emotions can feel new again. Your body might shift into fight, flight, freeze, or fawn. That activation isn’t a sign that something is going wrong. It’s a sign that something previously stored is coming into awareness.

It can be tempting to stop and let everything settle again. And sometimes pacing is important. But healing doesn’t happen by pushing things back down. It happens by staying present long enough (and safely enough) to process what has surfaced.

Just like a pool gets clean by scooping out the dirt, your nervous system heals by processing what it once had to hold onto for survival.

When the dirt is removed, the water doesn’t just look clear, it becomes safe. Safe to swim in. Safe to relax in. In the same way, healing isn’t about appearing calm on the surface. It’s about becoming steady and safe on the inside because what was sitting at the bottom has been removed.
