Very occasionally people inquire about our services and wonder if having a companion visit their loved one would be worth while.
There have been multiple studies done on the impact Companionship has on people living with dementia. Some key findings show:
1. Companionship reduces feelings of loneliness and anxiety.
2. Companionship can stimulate cognitive function leading to a slower progression of the illness.
3. Stress levels in the individual, care team, and family members are reduced by the consistent presence of a caring companion.
4. Companionship can help to establish routine, which serves to benefit those with memory challenges.
But we don't need studies to tell us how impactful and helpful our caring Companions can be.
Recently we heard from our client Mike A. We have been supporting his Mom since 2021, and have been by her side through multiple moves, and through her cognitive decline. We adore her bright spirit, her singing, her joyful presence, and her stories! Not too long ago there was a flu outbreak in her long term care residence and our services were paused briefly.
*****Here is what Mike had to say: βDuring the week that Extended Family Services wasnβt visiting Mom she was more agitated and sometime acted aggressively toward nursing staff. However, when visits resumed, we noticed that Mom returned to her usual [calmer, happier] self.β *****
Mike A. wanted us to know that our visits are appreciated by his family and the staff in his Mom's long term care home.
We are grateful for the impact we have on our clients well-being, and are here to support you and your loved ones if you need us.
