🐾Woof & Whiskers Wednesday🐾

Say Hello to Twitch, the adorable 8-month-old Maine C**n kitten that was in for a visit recently for a pre-neuter exam! 😻

🌟Did you know?
🐱Maine c***s are one of the largest domestic cat breeds - some can weigh up to 25 lbs when fully grown!
💨They're famous for their fluffy tails, tufted ears, and sweet, gentle personalities - earning them the nickname "gentle giants".
🧠These kitties are also highly intelligent and often enjoy learning tricks or even playing fetch!
❄Their thick, water-resistant fur helps them stay cozy in cold weather - perform for our Canadian winters! 🇨🇦

We can't wait to watch Twitch grow into those big paws and that tail! 🐾💜

💊Antibiotic Awareness Week: What It Means For Your Pet 🐾

Antibiotics are powerful medicines that treat bacterial infections - but they must be used carefully to stay effective. When antibiotics are used too often or incorrectly, bacteria can become resistant, meaning the medication no longer works.

At our clinic, we're committed to responsible antibiotic use to protect your pets' health and help slow resistance. Here's how you can help ⬇

🐶Use antibiotics exactly as prescribed. Finish the full course, even if your pet seems better.
🐱Never share or reuse leftover antibiotics. Different pets and infections require different treatments.
🩺Regular checkups and preventive care can reduce the need for antibiotics in the first place.
💧Good hygiene & vaccinations also play a big role in preventing infections.

By working together, we can keep antibiotics effective for the pets who truly need them! 💜

November is Pet Diabetes Month!🩺

We see many cats and dogs that have diabetes. This surprises a lot of people!

The most common symptoms we see that bring pets in to see us are:
👉Increased thirst
👉Increased urination
👉Increased appetite
👉Unexplained weight loss

If you are noticing these symptoms developing, it's possible your pet has diabetes. We can do a blood test and a urinalysis to help determine the underlying cause of the symptoms, and if the culprit is diabetes, we get started on treatment as soon as we can.

Treatment for pets is largely the same as in humans - insulin injections! We can also place long-term blood glucose monitoring systems like Freestyle Libre onto your pet to help us fine-tune their insulin dosing.

Don't worry - if your pet is diagnosed, we will book you in for an appointment with a technician, and lots of reading material, to learn how to give subcutaneous injections, how to place the Libre, and how to best monitor your pet's glucose levels.

Diabetes in a life-long condition that can be very daunting when first diagnosed, but we are always here to answer questions and help you along the way.

🐾November is National Senior Pet Month!🐾

This month, we're celebrating our wise, whiskered, and wonderfully loyal senior pets - and raising awareness about how their needs change as they age. 💕

🐶For Dogs:
Most dogs are considered senior around 7 years of age, though larger breeds may reach their senior years closer to 5-6 years, and smaller breeds a bit later, around 8-9 years. As dogs age, they may slow down, gain weight more easily, or develop stiffness after walks. Regular wellness exams, a healthy diet, joint supplements, and exercise help keep them feeling their best!

🐱For Cats:
Cats are typically considered senior around 10 years of age, though many stay playful well into their teens! Senior cats benefit from more frequent checkups, dental care, and monitoring for changes in weight, appetite, or energy - all of which can signal early signs of illness.

👩‍⚕️Why Regular Vet Visits Matter:
Senior pets can develop health issues that aren't always easy to spot, such as kidney disease, arthritis, thyroid problems, or dental pain. Seeing the vet at least once a year - and sometimes every six months - helps to catch these changes early, when they're easier to manage and treatment is most effective. Early detection can add years of comfort and happiness to your pet's life! 💗

✨Whether your furry friend is starting to show a few grey hairs or has been your loyal companion for over a decade, take this month to celebrate them!

🎃🐾Halloween Safety Tips for Pets! 🎃🐾

Halloween can be a spooktacular time for us - but it can be downright scary for our furry friends! Here are a few important reminders to help keep your pets safe this Halloween:

👻 Loud Noises & Costumes:
Trick-or-treaters, doorbells, and strange costumes can be stressful for pets. Keep them in a quiet, secure room during peak hours to help them feel calm & safe.

🍫 Dangerous Treats:
Chocolate, xylitol (found in sugar-free candy), raisins, and many other Halloween goodies are toxic to pets. Keep candy bowls out of reach and remind kids not to share with their furry friends!

🕸 Decorations to Watch Out For:
Glow sticks, fake cobwebs, and electrical cords can be hazardous if chewed or swallowed. Make sure decorations are pet proof and out of reach.

🕯 Jack-o-lanterns & Candles:
Curious noses and wagging tails don't mix with open flames! Opt for battery operated candles to keep everyone safe.

💜Keep the night fun - and fright-free - for your pets! If you suspect your pet has ingested something they shouldn't have, contact your vet or emergency clinic right away!
