It's that time of year... time to start planning your gardens, maybe do some winter sowing or set up an indoor seed starting station. We can help! We have lots of veggie and flower seeds that are completely-totally-absolutely FREE. Stop by the office most weekdays between 10-2 or give us a call/email to arrange a pick up time.

Nova Scotians who quilt, knit or crochet, we need your help! 🧢

Thank you to the many generous Nova Scotians who quilt, knit or crochet blankets for patients receiving treatment at the QEII Cancer Centre and in our Palliative Care unit. We are seeking blankets for patients in:

Cancer Care – lap-sized blankets
Palliative Care – single-bed size blankets

The blankets will be handed out by volunteers to the patients in palliative care, and in the numerous cancer centre waiting rooms while they wait for treatment. A lap-sized blanket, or β€œlapghan”, is made to fit over a wheelchair or someone in a sitting position. Sizes typically range from 32” to 48” (81-122 cm) wide by 35” to 40” (89-102 cm) in length. There are many patterns to choose from online. A single-bed size blanket is around 65” wide by 90” in length (165 x 228 cm).

If you would like to quilt, knit or crochet a lapghan or blanket for our cancer centre and palliative care patients, please bring your donations to our volunteer coordinator of Cancer Care and Palliative Care, Erin Fair, in Volunteer Services, Room 24, main floor of the Centennial Building, any time from Monday - Friday, 8 a.m. - 4 p.m, or to Valley Regional Hospital in Kentville, Chipman Building, Room 622, any time from Monday - Friday, 9 a.m. - 3 p.m.

If no one is there when you arrive, or if you can only deliver after these hours, donations can be left outside the office door and will be collected the following business day.

πŸ™Œ NEW πŸ™Œ The QEII Foundation will give an in-kind tax donation receipt for a minimum of $50 of yarn, wool, or fabric purchased to make these lap blankets. Receipts will be issued for the cost of materials, less any taxes paid. You will just need to give your receipts and the following information, along with your donation:
β€’ A receipt from place of purchase with the cost of materials.
β€’ Your name and mailing address.

Thank you to the quilting, knitting and crochet community for all your amazing support! πŸ₯°

The CHBs are a committed group of volunteers who are working together to improve the health and wellness of their communities CHBs also do advocacy work, create partnership and collaboration and, distribute Wellness funds annually to local community groups. Developed by Barb Madic

Community Health Boards (CHBs) are groups of volunteers from your community. They work together to improve health & wellness where we live, work, play and learn. They gather your ideas and share information about how to improve and promote health & wellness close to home. They focus on the many factors that affect health & wellness in our communities including income, education and sense of belonging, among others. CHBs share what they have learned about your health & wellness priorities with Nova Scotia Health Authority, IWK Health Centre, and community groups. CHBs advocate for actions to promote and improve health & wellness based on what communities say is most important. Guided by their Community Health Plans, they develop partnerships with local community groups and they award Wellness Fund grants to local community projects
