Effort and Ease

In every asana there exists a conversation between the effort (shtira) and the ease (sukha), meaning that there are parts of the body that need to engage and parts of the body that are asked to soften and find comfort.

This internal conversation helps us to find the pose in a safe and constructive manner, while also realizing its benefits and helping us find our bliss.

In a balance practice, the effort inherent in coming into a pose is the stabilizer that holds muscles and bones in place. But when we find that moment where our bones are stacked, our feet are grounded, and our awareness can rest both internally and externally, that's where we find the ease.

Focus

Focus is an essential component in cultivated balance in body, heart, and mind. "Where your focus goes, your energy flows", as they say.

In yoga, external focus is called drishti, and internal focus is called dharana. Both of these are tools we can use to enhance our inner awareness and bring about stillness, steadiness, and a deepened connection to our bodies, hearts, and minds.

When we find our external focus it creates capacity to find our internal focus and lets the mind and the body shut out distraction so we can move toward our goal with intention and purpose.

- Strengthens the arches, ankles, calves and thighs
- Lengthens the spine

Alignment

Alignment isn't just about stacking bones and tuning into the innate connection between the sole of the foot and the crown of the head, it's also about aligning thoughts with feelings, intentions with desires, and words with actions.

When we practice physical alignment, we create space and capacity to find it in these other, more subtle, aspects of the self.

In yoga, the sushumna is the central nadi that runs up and down the length of the spine, from the perineum to the crown of the head. This energetic highway runs through all seven chakras and, when free of blockages, allows a free flow of prana (life force), providing the body with the energetic nutrients it needs. Thus there is balance between the subtle and physical bodies, between the two hemispheres of the brain, and between yin and yang.

Benefits of Standing One Leg Tadasana

- Improves circulation
- Enhances muscular endurance
- Improves balance
- Stimulates digestion
- Builds focus
- Develops will power
- Centres the mind

Grounding

When we are grounded we know who we are, have a sense of purpose and belonging, and we cultivate a calm mind and nervous system.

"For bipedal man the feet tread the dust of the earth, and throughout history walking on terra firma has involved migration and transformation - being on the move.
Generating stability and support through the bones and connective tissues of the feet can help regulate the nervous system, increase circulation, and improve respiration. The earthward rooting of he foundation of the body can help bring composure in the face of difficulty, whether it is a fragmented family, a health crisis, a failing marriage, or a precarious economy." ~Tias Little
