Why Does Cold Weather Cause Joint Pain & Stiffness? ❄️🦴

If you notice your joints aching more in the cold, you’re not alone! While there’s no single explanation, one theory suggests that drops in barometric pressure cause tendons, muscles, and surrounding tissues to expand, leading to discomfort—especially in joints affected by arthritis.

đź’ˇ Tips to Reduce Joint Pain in Cold Weather:
✔️ Dress in layers to keep your body warm and ease the shock of cold temperatures.
✔️ Stay active—regular movement keeps muscles and joints healthy and prevents stiffness.
✔️ Build strength through exercise to reduce joint pressure and prevent injuries.
✔️ Maintain a healthy weight to decrease stress on weight-bearing joints.
✔️ Use heating pads on sore areas to relax muscles and relieve pain.
✔️ Stretch before heading outside to loosen stiff joints.
✔️ Prioritize good sleep, nutrition, and a positive mindset for overall joint health.

Taking these simple steps can help you stay mobile and pain-free all winter long! ❄️💙

Happy Groundhog Day to you!

Groundhog Day, celebrated on February 2nd, is a tradition where people eagerly await the emergence of a groundhog from its burrow.

According to folklore, if the groundhog sees its shadow, there will be six more weeks of winter. If it doesn't see its shadow, it's believed that spring will come early.

It's a fun and lighthearted way to mark the midpoint of winter in some cultures. Whether or not you believe in the groundhog's weather forecasting abilities, I hope you have a great day!

Not sure whether you need physiotherapy or massage therapy for your aches and pains?

Here’s a simple way to tell:

• Physiotherapy is ideal if your pain is linked to an injury, ongoing condition, weakness, limited movement, or pain that keeps returning. It focuses on identifying the cause, restoring movement, improving strength, and preventing recurrence.

• Massage therapy is best if you’re dealing with muscle tension, stiffness, stress-related tightness, or general soreness. It helps relax muscles, improve circulation, and reduce day-to-day discomfort.

Still unsure? That’s completely normal. A proper assessment can help determine the right approach—or whether a combination of both will get you the best results.

Your body gives signals. The right care makes all the difference.

Shoveling doesn't have to be a pain!

Stretch first.
Bend your knees and keep your back straight.
Keep your feet shoulder width apart and a low stance.
Scoop and lift with your legs, not your back.
Keep the shovel close to your body to make it easier to lift.
Don't over fill the shovel.
Take frequent breaks!

When you are done shoveling, call to book a massage!
Or if you think you may have pulled a muscle, our physiotherapists are here to help too!

Winter can make it tempting to stay indoors, but spending time with family and friends and getting out of the house can make a powerful difference to your physical and mental well-being.

Social connection helps reduce stress, improve mood, and combat feelings of isolation that often come with shorter days and colder weather. Even simple activities—like meeting a friend for coffee, going for a walk, or attending a family gathering—can boost energy levels and help beat the winter blues.

Staying active and engaged during the winter months supports better mental health, keeps your body moving, and reminds you that routine and connection are essential year-round. Make it a priority to get out, stay connected, and take care of yourself this winter.
