Do you drink enough water?

This is a conversation I have with most of my patients... and most of them know they aren't getting enough... but many of us don't understand the importance of hydration for joint health

Your have something called synovial fluid that sits in the joints and provides lubrication and cushioning so that the bones don't bump against each other. If you don't have enough lubrication, because you are dehydrated, you could end up with joint pain and stiffness. Or if you already have an underlying condition that causes joint pain, dehydration could aggravate it.

If you notice a little bit of stiffness in the morning (maybe after a glass of wine the night before) focus on upping your fluid intake. I recommend going slow and adding 1 extra cup of water per day for 1 week, then increasing by another cup the following week to give your body time to adjust.

Everyone is different and so are your fluid needs... so it is best to speak with a healthcare provider to determine how much water you need. Generally, 8 cups (2L) is a guideline that many people use for baseline water intake.

If your pain/stiffness doesn't improve with your hydration status- it is a good idea to get checked out for other causes of joint pain. There are many natural therapies that are beneficial for managing some of these conditions- such as arthritis.

Have you tried acupuncture?

Acupuncture can be a great tool to relieve joint pain and stiffness. It uses very small needles inserted into specific points in the body to stimulate the body's natural healing processes.

When a needle is inserted it stimulates the central nervous system resulting in the release of endorphins and enkephalins, the body's natural painkillers. These benefits can be enhanced by adding electro-acupuncture, which increases the intensity of the treatment by adding a current between two needles.

If you haven't tried acupuncture for your joint pain... Now is the time to give it a shot! (👆Link in bio to book or let's chat!👇)

While you can't reverse osteoarthritis (yet) there are ways that you can prevent it from progressing or delay it from showing up. Daily movement is the best form of prevention!

WHY is movement so important?

1. Movement helps to build muscle which supports the joints integrity and helps them move.

2. The best way to nourish a joint is through movement.

The cartilage that lines the inside of joints does not have a direct blood supply, blood is what brings nutrients and the health of the cartilage is important for preventing osteoarthritis.

When we put load or a pressure on a joint, it squeezes together and pushes all the waste products out of the cartilage, then when the load is removed there is space to allow fresh nutrients to seep in and support the cartilage. We are literally relying on moving the joint to bring nutrients to it!

SO Remember...

Get active everyday- with many of us working from home,You might sit at your desk for hours without realizing that you haven't even stood up. Set aside some time every single day for a walk or yoga or anything to keep your joints moving!

That being said, always ease into exercise plans and don't overdo it. Listen to your body and don't expect to jump back into an activity as at the same place you were a year ago (unless you have been consistently doing it).

Don't push through pain. This is your body's way of telling you that you are doing too much or the wrong thing. If you injure yourself make sure you seek care and check with your healthcare provider before trying to exercise that joint.

Do you wake up with stiff and sore joints every morning?

While this is often just associated with "getting older" there could be an underlying reason that you experience aches, pains and creaking in your joints.
One of the most common causes is osteoarthritis.

Typically, osteoarthritis is caused from "wear and tear" to the joint and presents slowly over months or years, but injury in the joint could initiate and speed up the progression.

Here are some of the most common signs that you could have osteoarthritis:

☝Usually present in 1 or a few joints, not widespread in all joints

👎Joints that are progressively more sore/swollen

🚶Joint stiffness, especially when first starting to move

💃Increased pain with certain activities

🙉crunching, grinding or cracking sensations in the joint

If you think you may have osteoarthritis there are things that can be done to get you feeling like yourself again! Stay tuned tips for prevention and treatment in the next week.

🤔Did you know that dehydration can have a huge negative impact on your athletic performance?

Losing just 2% of your body weight in water can have an impact on your performance and many athletes will lose more than this during a workout if they are not hydrating well!

It is SO important to drink water before, during and after your workout or competitions... especially with this summer heatwave. This should be a non-negotiable part of your game preparation and cool downs and is a free and legal performance enhancer!

The easiest way to tell if you are hydrated is to check the colour of your urine. If it is clear or pale yellow then you are good to go! If not, you may want to add some more fluids to your day.

Remember it is possible to over hydrate so check with your healthcare provider if you are unsure about how much water you need.
