𝐎𝐜𝐭𝐨𝐛𝐞𝐫 𝟐𝟔 𝐢𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐅𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐭 𝐃𝐚𝐲 𝐨𝐟 𝐀𝐠𝐢𝐨𝐬 𝐃𝐢𝐦𝐢𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐨𝐬 (𝐒𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐭 𝐃𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐨𝐬).

A very Happy Nameday to me, my son and all who celebrate today!

Saint Demetrios, born in Thessaloniki in 280 AD, was a Roman Army officer and devout Christian missionary. Known for his courage and dedication, he spread the Gospel secretly, converting pagans. Arrested by Emperor Maximian, he proclaimed, “only in Christ do I believe” and endured imprisonment and torture. His follower, Nestoras, defeated a gladiator champion with his blessing, leading to both their executions in 306 AD. Known as “The Myrrh Gusher” for his fragrant tomb, Demetrios became Thessaloniki’s patron saint. Celebrations of his legacy continue today, including Thessaloniki’s annual international trade exhibition.

This was our 2025 pilgrimage hike to a little mountain top chapel in the name of St Demetrios. Visible from our house with the afternoon sun. It’s very remote. Rarely anybody goes up there, including priests! Many locals and visitors don’t even know it exists.... Which makes it even more special. A pathless trek with extreme terrain including loose and jagged rocks and thorn bushes. We gave it a nice cleaning, lit some candles and prayed... Past treks were in 2014 and 2023. Looking forward to the next trek up.
