For years I was managing a business that renovated residential properties for improved accessibility and safety, essentially a business that enabled people to age-in-place.
Very often we had customers who needed to have a barrier free shower system installed for a relatively short period of time while the family member remained at home. When no longer needed, the barrier free shower system could be removed and the bathroom returned to it's original or upgraded design.
For these applications, we installed a three or four piece barrier free shower system that featured plywood backed walls (structural integrity and ease of grab bar placement) with a beautiful faux ceramic tile interior and a low threshold for easy walk-in or shower chair access. The great thing about these showers is that there is no mud, mortar and ceramic tile needed to install it. All you needed was to make sure that the framing was square and the plumbing was lined up and from there, the shower was easily installed within the day. When no longer needed, the shower could be removed without a mess and usually in less than two hours.
Here's a picture of the shower noting the many features that are important for safe and enjoyable shower access and ideally suited for those wishing to age-in-place!
