Oh the question some of us ask ourselves every Iftar!

As you may know Pakora are made of spices, vegetables and herbs mixed in a chickpea flour batter and commonly found in the South Asian cuisine.

Pakora are deep fried which makes us wonder how many are okay to have? Although pakora do provide some fibre from the vegetables and chickpea flour, they do absorb quite a bit of oil which makes them a high calorie food. The number of Calories can vary depending on the ingredients used in the pakora and the size of the individual pakora but on average Calories can range from 50-80 Calories per pakora. The Calories can rack up quite quickly if you have a plate of pakoras sitting in front of you especially at Iftar time!

If you do love this hot and crispy snack but are also watching your waistline, here are a few things to keep in mind:

1. Don’t prepare them for every Iftar! Enjoy them once or twice a week only.
2. Eat a smaller portion! Make smaller sized pakora and stick to 2-3 pakora at a time. Think of them as a side, not a main!
3. Try alternative methods of cooking pakoras such as baking or air-frying

Some important Nutrition Tips to use this

Hydrate
It can be easy to get dehydrated during fasting. Signs of dehydration may include: thirst, dry/cracked lips, headache, lethargy, weakness and even dizziness. Divide your fluid intake over the non-fasting hours instead of drinking at once. For example, 2 cups at Iftar, 2 cups at Suhoor, and another 4 cups in between. Include foods to help hydrate such as soups, smoothies, yogurt, cucumbers and fruits such as melons and oranges.

Add Complex Carbs
Complex carbs are slow to digest so they keep you FULL longer and provide ENERGY, fibre, vitamins & minerals.

Include Protein
Add a variety of protein sources at Suhoor & Iftar. It will keep you FULL longer & prevent muscle loss.

Watch the Salt!
Limit the amount of salt you add to your foods. Too much will make you thirsty.

If you are a coffee or tea drinker you need to know this for Ramadan!

Caffeine from tea/coffee is a natural stimulant that helps us stay alert and feel less lethargic. And cutting it out can leave you feeling sleepy, tired, and possibly with a headache.

If you experience this, it might be a good idea to gradually reduce your intake over 2-3 weeks prior to Ramadan so your body is ready once fasting begins!
