On the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, weâre proudly highlighting Cassie, certified Pathologistsâ Assistant (PA) at Horizonâs The Moncton Hospital. đ©âđŹ
Cassie has always been enthusiastic about science but fell in love with pathology when she found a tumour in a sheepâs eye during her eighth-grade biology class. She has now been in the field for over 20 years!
As a PA, Cassie examines and dissects tissue collected from patients, including everything from a small skin tag to cancerous breast tissue. After examining the tissue, she samples the areas that a pathologist will need to examine under a microscope to determine a diagnosis. Cassie even performs autopsies, assisting pathologists in determining the cause of death, helping speak for the deceased, and giving closure to loved ones.
âHaving a career that uses your education and skills to positively impact patient care is incredibly rewarding,â Cassie shares. âPatients donât get to see how many people are caring for them behind the scenes, but our laboratory department is filled with medical professionals dedicated to ensuring patients receive the best, most accurate care.â
To women and girls interested in science, Cassieâs advice is: âIf there is a career you want to know more about, reach out to someone in that role! Even though it can be intimidating, the person will usually be honoured and generous with their time and advice.â
Join us in thanking Cassie, and all our women in science at Horizon. You are an inspiration to the next generation of scientists in New Brunswick! đ
