A positron emission tomography (PET) scan is an imaging test that uses a small amount of radioactive material to visualize how organs and tissues are functioning. At The Neuro, PET scans are used to reveal brain activity for both clinical and research purposes.
Here, chief PET technician Chris Hsiao explains more about PET and what to expect when getting this kind of scan.

Less than 150 people have been diagnosed with Schinzel-Giedion Syndrome (SGS) worldwide. It's a disease that solely affects children who rarely survive past the first decade of life. This means that parents, siblings, and caregivers navigate life with a medically complex child.
A groundbreaking new RNA therapy project, funded by the D2R | DNA to RNA initiative through its Translational Impact Research funding program, is taking shape under the leadership of neuroscientist Carl Ernst at The Neuro of McGill University. Ernst’s lab is dedicated to studying the functional genetics of life-debilitating rare neurodevelopmental disorders, including SGS.
A joyful celebration this week at The Neuro’s Preston Robb–Mierins Family Day Centre: the 92nd birthday of Patricia Turgeon, who has been receiving weekly treatments here for more than 20 years. Her strength and resilience are an inspiration to the entire team.
The team surprised her with decorations, a cake baked by team member Isabelle Sansoucy, and gathered for photos to mark the occasion.
The Day Centre provides focused care to prevent unnecessary hospitalizations, reduce hospital stays, and ensure timely access to intravenous therapies such as immunoglobulins, IV steroids, and chemotherapy, as well as supporting patients before and after diagnostic procedures.

Une célébration remplie de joie a eu lieu cette semaine au Centre de jour Preston Robb–Mierins du Neuro : le 92e anniversaire de Patricia Turgeon, qui reçoit des traitements hebdomadaires ici depuis plus de 20 ans. Sa force et sa résilience sont une source d’inspiration pour toute l’équipe.
L’équipe lui a fait la surprise de décorer le Centre, de lui offrir un gâteau préparé par Isabelle Sansoucy, et s’est réunie pour prendre des photos afin de souligner l’occasion.
Le Centre de jour offre des soins spécialisés visant à prévenir les hospitalisations inutiles, réduire la durée des séjours à l’hôpital et assurer un accès rapide à des thérapies intraveineuses telles que les immunoglobulines, les stéroïdes intraveineux et la chimiothérapie, tout en soutenant les patients avant et après les procédures diagnostiques.

The Neuro held its annual holiday luncheon yesterday for staff, faculty and students. This free lunch is provided each year with the support of the Reitman family. 🎄 ❄️ 🍽️
The Reitmans began this tradition in 1947, after Ruth Reitman had an operation conducted by neurosurgeon Dr. William Cone. To express her appreciation, Mrs. Reitman held a holiday party that same year for Dr. Cone and his assisting staff of residents and nurses.
During the lunch the Neuro Cosgrove Choir performed and speeches were given by Joel Reitman, Neuro Director Dr. Guy Rouleau and Colleen Timm, Associate President and Executive Director, Centre universitaire de santé McGill - McGill University Health Centre.
Thanks to the Reitman family and all organizers for making this event possible.

Le Neuro a organisé hier son déjeuner de vacances annuel pour le personnel, les enseignants et les étudiants. Ce déjeuner gratuit est offert chaque année grâce au soutien de la famille Reitman. 🎄 ❄️ 🍽️

Ensemble, nous faisons avancer la recherche contre les tumeurs cérébrales.
En 2022, BMO Groupe financier a investi 2 M$ pour soutenir le Centre de recherche sur les tumeurs cérébrales du Neuro. Cet engagement se traduit aujourd’hui par des avancées majeures en neurosciences.
La semaine dernière, Daniel Jarry, Directeur principal des opérations et Mario Rigante, Président régional du Québec ont dévoilé la plaque commémorative, symbole de ce partenariat durable.

Last year we donated just over 40 books and pencils to the Neuro Patient Resource Centre Library - for patients & families to learn about the brain, and practice their fine motor skills.
Maria Zamfir, PhD & Marion Van Horn, PhD both worked at the Neuro for many years, and this time of year we are giving back to the place that inspired many of our neuron/glia designs!
For every 3 books purchased online in December we will donate one to the Neuro Patient Resource Centre Library! 🧠📚

From early-morning calibrations to working with cutting-edge radiotracers made on-site, they support studies exploring Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, multiple sclerosis and more.
They guide participants through every step—easing anxiety and adapting protocols for those with cognitive or mobility challenges. Their expertise ensures each scan is safe, precise and tailored to the research.
With one of the world’s largest radiotracer libraries and a collaborative team spanning neuroscience, radiochemistry, physics and data science, our PET technologists play a key role in pushing the boundaries of brain research.

Derrière chaque TEP au Neuro se trouve une équipe de technologues en recherche hautement qualifiés qui font progresser les neurosciences. Voici Catherine Saleh et Chris Hung-Hsin Hsiao de notre Centre d’imagerie cérébrale McConnell.
Des calibrations matinales aux radiotraceurs de pointe produits sur place, ils soutiennent des études portant sur l’Alzheimer, le Parkinson, la sclérose en plaques et bien plus encore. Ils accompagnent les participants à chaque étape — en apaisant leurs inquiétudes et en adaptant les protocoles pour ceux ayant des défis cognitifs ou de mobilité. Leur expertise garantit des examens sécuritaires, précis et adaptés aux besoins de la recherche.
