🧬 Les résultats encourageants du tout premier essai clinique d’une immunothérapie contre le VIH sont publiés dans le journal Nature Medicine.

Ceux-ci apportent un nouvel espoir : la possibilité de contrôler le VIH en renforçant le système immunitaire — sans avoir recours à un traitement antirétroviral quotidien, souvent difficile à suivre. Mené au Service des maladies virales chroniques du CUSM, ainsi que dans 10 autres sites aux États-Unis et en Australie, cet essai de phase 1 a été commandité par AbbVie.

🔬 Cette avancée s’appuie sur des années de recherche et d’engagement du Dr Jean-Pierre Routy, investigateur principal de l’étude et scientifique principal au sein du Programme en maladies infectieuses et immunité en santé mondiale de L’Institut, ainsi que d’autres chercheurs montréalais, qui ont exploré, dans les cellules de patients vivant avec le VIH, comment cibler et bloquer la voie PD-1 — un « frein » qui empêche les cellules T de combattre efficacement le virus.

🧬 Encouraging results from the first clinical trial of an HIV immunotherapy have just been published in Nature Medicine.

The study offers new hope: the potential to control HIV by strengthening the immune system — without the need for daily antiretroviral therapy, which can be difficult to maintain. Conducted at the MUHC Chronic Viral Illness Service, along with 10 other sites in the United States and Australia, this phase 1 trial was sponsored by AbbVie.

🔬 The findings build on years of research and dedication by Dr. Jean-Pierre Routy, principal investigator of the study and Senior Scientist in the IDIGH Program at The Institute, together with other Montréal researchers who have explored how to target and block the PD-1 pathway — a key immune “brake” that prevents T cells from effectively fighting the virus.

Ceux-ci apportent un nouvel espoir : la possibilité de contrôler le VIH en renforçant le système immunitaire — sans avoir recours à un traitement antirétroviral quotidien, qui s’avère souvent difficile à suivre.

L’essai de phase 1 a été mené par l’équipe de recherche de L’Institut rattachée au Service des maladies virales chroniques du CUSM, ainsi que dans 10 autres sites aux États-Unis et en Australie, et commandité par AbbVie.

Encouraging results from the first clinical trial of an HIV immunotherapy have been published today in the prestigious journal Nature Medicine.

The study offers new hope: the potential to control HIV by strengthening the immune system — without the need for daily antiretroviral therapy, which can be challenging for many to maintain.

This first-in-human trial was conducted by the MUHC Chronic Viral Illness Service (CVIS) research team at The Institute, as well as in 10 other sites in the United States and Australia, and sponsored by AbbVie.

💡 Médicament Québec, un programme du ministère de l’Économie, de l’Innovation et de l’Énergie, accorde 1,5 M$ à Ciriaco Piccirillo, Ph. D., et Brian J. Ward, M.D., pour créer le Réseau québécois d’immunologie humaine — un projet novateur visant à faire progresser le développement de vaccins à l’échelle provinciale.

🔬 Le projet réunit des chercheuses et chercheurs de quatre institutions montréalaises, ainsi que des scientifiques principaux d’Aramis Biotechnologies — chef de file mondial des vaccins à base de plantes — et de CellCarta, chef de file du profilage immunitaire.

🧫 Cette collaboration développera des plateformes d’immunologie avancées produisant des données humaines détaillées pour mieux comprendre le fonctionnement des vaccins, accélérer l’identification des candidats les plus prometteurs et soutenir les avancées en recherche biomédicale, notamment en immunothérapie.

💡Médicament Québec, a program of the Ministère de l’Économie, de l’Innovation et de l’Énergie, has awarded $1.5 million to Ciriaco Piccirillo, PhD, and Brian J. Ward, MD, to establish the Quebec Human Immunology Network — a pioneering initiative to advance vaccine development across the province.

🔬 The project brings together researchers from four Montréal institutions and senior scientists from Aramis Biotechnologies — a world leader in plant-based vaccine production — and CellCarta, a global leader in immune profiling.

🧫 This collaboration will develop advanced immunology platforms that generate detailed human data to better understand how vaccines work, identify the most promising candidates faster, and drive progress in biomedical research, including cancer immunotherapy.

Yesterday, we had the pleasure of hosting our Welcome Event for all IDIGH staff and trainees. It was a wonderful opportunity to meet new members 👋 and reconnect with those already part of our community.
