Partners! Your presence is so important in the birth space.
You can bring calm, warmth and provide grounding with slow breaths, firm touch and eye contact…loving words of encouragement.

You are the gatekeeper of energy in that space. Setting boundaries around who comes in, what is being said, what happens next for example.

This isn’t easy to do when we are emotionally invested in that moment.
So a little role play with your doula beforehand, can create the prompts for you to lean on in those moments when things get hectic.

Provide time for yourself to process your feelings and expectations around birth before labour begins.

You can bring C A L M to this space ✨

Yesterday I got the babysitter to come by for three hours so I could go for a walk and read a book.

It was just the regulation I needed, so I could go back and be present and happy with my children.💆🏻‍♀️

I’m often solo parenting, and with zero family to rely on, I have to reach out for help sometimes!
Do I always use this time for self care? No. The truth is I need to use it for uninterrupted, whine free and no lost child grocery shopping too, but I whatever I use it for, I need and want this time alone…no one will ever give it to me unless I give it to myself.

Whatever it is that you need to give yourself permission to do, whether it be to not answer that text, or email till Monday, ask for all the help, firm up your boundaries with people or just take an afternoon off…make it happen.
Parenting is hard. We know this, either because we’ve heard it, are in it or have been through it. You deserve and need your own space, to do whatever the hell you want…

Here’s to giving yourself permission to doing all the things that will make you feel better💕

Happy Day to all the IBCLC’s out there!
Thank you for all your incredible work supporting new families in their infant feeding journeys.

So what is an IBCLC?

The acronym stands for International Board Certified Lactation Consultant.
They are often called Lactation Consultants and support new families with everything infant feeding such as, pumping schedules for work, best feeding positions, mastitis, clogged ducts, latching issues, feeding pain, low milk supply etc etc…

They are one of the major referrals I suggest prenatally and postpartum.

Do I really need one?

I always recommend seeing one ahead of time, taking a infant feeding workshop, or visiting a La Leche League meeting to learn more before baby arrives and most definitely having a few IBCLC names and numbers on the fridge for postpartum.

Feeding baby is natural but it doesn’t always come easily (personal experience with my first😅).

Like many of you, I have been glued to the news about the invasion and resulting war in Ukraine.

It is a devastating and scary time for the people of Ukraine and for many of us watching around the world.

I have been particularly struck by the stories of babies born in underground metros doubling as bomb shelters and the images of babies and their parents sitting at border crossings. Many not being able to cross due to the high influx and discrimination by border guards.
I am also looking at the helpers and those who have stayed in their cities and towns, whose access to water, medicine, and fuel is limited.

It’s important to note, that if a parent has been breastfeeding/body feeding that giving them formula in this situation can be more harmful than good. Please swipe to see why!

If a parent has already been using formula readymade is better.
If you are an organization please send readymade formula. But please understand cleaning bottles and ni***es will be difficult when infrastructure is destroyed.

Embracing traditional birthing practices in Sturgeon Lake First Nation means the First Nation will soon open a birthing centre for those who seek a traditional birth, as opposed to a birth in hospital.

Hey Everyone!
Did you know that your fl**ge on your pump is an important consideration when getting your pump set up and having it work for you?
✨Flanges come in different sizes to accommodate your size.
✨Flanges that are too small can cause pain and chafing on the ni**le and ar**la.
✨Flanges that are too big won’t remove milk as well due to lack of suction. This can be super frustrating!
✨Flanges that are the correct size remove the milk well within approximately 15 minutes, and don’t cause pain or chafing.
✨Half an inch of your ar**la should go inside the tunnel of the fl**ge.

Happy pumping everyone!

All of my children were born in my late 30’s and early 40’s. I was labelled a geriatric birther. Evidence shows that if you are an older birther you nay be subject to more monitoring, more interventions and even cesarean birth. Even when risk if complications from cesarean birth increase as you get older. If you’re otherwise healthy you can always ask what other risk factors put you in a high risk category besides age. Read about it here...
