🚨 Most of our clients who wear progressive/bifocal lenses report neck pain. We’ve been seeing this a lot lately.

Why❓

When looking straight at the screen while the reading prescription is in the bottom of the lens, the person makes constant neck movements to see most of the content. The neck is also in extension for much of the work day.

The solution❓

➡️ Have a pair of “computer glasses” with only the prescription required for reading the screen. That way, the neck can stay relaxed and the eyes can see all parts of the screen. Many people simply change the lenses in an old pair of frames. These become their work glasses.

➡️ In the short term, try to lower the screen height to see if the neck movements reduce. Aim to get new glasses as soon as possible.

Bien que le secteur public n’adresse pas de manière adéquate ce problème, de nombreux professionnels du secteur privé peuvent apporter leur aide, notamment notre ergothérapeute Melanie, qui a de l'expérience dans le domaine du COVID à long terme et des affections similaires, comme l'encéphalomyélite myalgique.

À ce jour, de nombreux Canadiens ont été infectés par le virus qui cause la COVID-19. La plupart des personnes se rétablissent et sont en mesure de poursuivre leurs activités. Cependant, pour des millions d’autres, les symptômes persistent pendant des mois et ont souvent une incidence sur leur capacité à travailler et sur leur qualité de vie en général.

Une nouvelle étude publiée aujourd’hui en partenariat avec Santé Canada (Canadiens en santé) et Agence de la santé publique du Canada examine les infections à la (y compris les réinfections), les symptômes à long terme et leur incidence sur la population adulte canadienne plus de trois ans après le début de la pandémie.

Our OT Melanie Kasner participated in the consultation committee for this INESSS best practice guidelines document about Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (ME/CFS).

If you or if someone you know is living with Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (formerly known as Chronic Fatigue Syndrome), this document might be very useful for their healthcare team!

📑 Mise à jour de l’Institut national d'excellence en santé et en services sociaux (INESSS) pour la prise en charge de l'encéphalomyélite myalgique (EM)! 🩺

En avril dernier, l’INESSS a mis à jour la documentation sur l’EM. Nous sommes très heureux du résultat et ces documents pourraient vous être très utiles afin d’éduquer vos médecins traitants et aussi pour ceux qui sont en processus d’acceptation d’assurance invalidité.

L’INESSS est une instance gouvernementale très reconnue des professionnels de la santé et ceux-ci sentiront le besoin de lire ces documents afin de se mettre à jour sur la maladie. Nous croyons que tous les médecins devraient être mis au courant concernant ces documents afin de leur donner de l'information pertinente sur l'EM.

If you want an individualized consultation, occupational therapists are very involved in the ergonomic world. They review your medical history and your current office set-up to reduce the risk of pain and injury while working! Occupational therapy is covered on most insurance plans.

We are sorry to read about the shortage of OTs in the vehicle adaptation program. There are many reasons that can explain the shortage of OTs in both the public and private sectors. These issues existed well before the pandemic.
We hope to see current and future governments, healthcare authorities, and professional orders address this growing problem that also extends to other healthcare professions.

Teri Lee Walters, who uses a wheelchair, is also the primary caregiver for her ailing mother. Walters needs an adapted vehicle now, but Quebec’s labour shortage is causing delays for a provincial subsidy program.

What do we bring to our premium office ergonomic consultations?

1️⃣ ASSESSMENT FORM: where we take notes on our clients’ pain, their posture, their job tasks and schedule, workstation measurements, etc.

2️⃣ MASK: to protect ourselves, our families, and our clients.

3️⃣ ANATOMY DIAGRAMS: So our clients are better equipped to manage their pain after the consultation. Our clients learn how the body moves and reacts to different postures.

4️⃣ TAPE MEASURE: To give specific equipment recommendations (chair size, desk size, footrest height, etc.)

5️⃣ PEN: To take notes, of course!

6️⃣ 8-IN-1 FOLDING SCREWDRIVER: To adjust and modify chair components on-the-spot. We don’t leave until we have adjusted everything that we can.

7️⃣ CLIPBOARD: We don’t sit at a table. Ergonomic consultations are dynamic, and we are always moving to demonstrate and educate on posture and workstation furniture. The clipboard allows us to take notes in standing.
