New look, same therapist 🙋🏻‍♀️

Check it out!!

I had the absolute pleasure of working with:

- Courtney was so sweet, talented, and brought my scrambled ideas to life in such a beautiful way!

- Amanda was so fun, uplifting and an absolute magician with the camera!

I felt so heard throughout the entire process, and I am so grateful for the final result🤍

“I feel like having a tantrum right now...”

I find it really interesting that some weeks come with recurring themes across my sessions with people of all different ages, genders, backgrounds, presenting issues, etc.

This week, on multiple occasions, I heard reference to individuals feeling like they were going to throw a tantrum when they were experiencing a great deal of distress

They also expressed this feeling to be juvenile, silly, or unhelpful

So we took time to ‘break down’ the tantrum and I thought it might be helpful for others to see as well!

When we think about a tantrum, it is typical to picture a toddler - and what do we know about toddler tantrums?
1. What they are distressed about is really important to them in the moment
2. They are perceiving a significant threat to the important ’thing’
3. They do not have the ability to regulate their emotions

How does this fit for you, as an adult, when something you care deeply about is being threatened?

Sometimes, it can be difficult to “practice what we preach”, so to speak.

As a therapist, I often talk about the importance of self-care, filling your tank, and making/taking that time for you..

but, I’ll admit, it can be difficult for me to implement my own advice during this busy season of life I find myself in

—————————

Yesterday, I had the opportunity to join the most wonderful group of women for a day of relaxation, and rejuvenation at

I would be lying if I said it didn’t initially cause me a great deal of anxiety to take a day away from my responsibilities when I have a list of things I haven’t been able to get to lately

I went anyway

What happened?
I was able to shut off and relax
I enjoyed excellent company
I ate great food
I even got a little sun tan in spring!

and this morning? I woke up refreshed, with the capacity to be a better mother and wife.. and guess what!? I have the energy, and mental space to get those things done that I haven’t been able to lately!

All of this to say:
1. Sometimes you just have to do it anyway
2. I promise that when you take the time and space to fill your own cup, you gain the capacity to fulfill your other roles

Any of these warning signs is a serious indication that you are having difficulty processing the stress and trauma of your position

These signs don’t always occur in this order

First Responders are trained to compartmentalize in order to focus and effectively follow protocols - and most are really good at this!

However, training can often lack in helping first responders know how to appropriately check-in with themselves, process the difficult experiences, and communicate personal needs

If you are a first responder and are experiencing one, many, or all of these warning signs, I encourage you to reach out to family, friends, and especially a mental health service provider

This concept has come up in various settings this week, with both clients and coworkers

We often talk about thoughts simply being just that, and technically holding no weight or truth

However, as a practical reminder, I think it is also important for us to keep in mind that..

🌟We can have distressing thoughts and we can still do the things we want/need to do🌟

We can notice the thoughts, metaphorically hang on to them, put them in our pocket, etc.. and then go “do the damn thing!”

Sometimes we don’t need to put energy or time (that we likely don’t even have) into challenging or trying to get rid of our thoughts

Sometimes we can just co-exist with our thoughts and still function

maladaptive coping are those behaviours that you engage in with the intention/hope of decreasing uncomfortable emotions or thoughts

*avoidance
*withdrawal
*substance use
*self-harm
*hyper-vigilance
*reassurance seeking
*etc

unfortunately, even though they might bring immediate relief, these behaviours typically have the opposite affect long-term and perpetuate the negative emotions or thoughts

—> it can be common for these behaviours to have once been necessary for survival
-> especially when having experienced overwhelming stressors, trauma, maltreatment/neglect during childhood or emotional invalidation

…however, when circumstances change and these behaviours are no longer necessary, they can start to get in the way of daily functioning

We all have an internal warning system, designed to avoid danger and keep us safe

When this system “misfires” it can send out a danger warning for a non-threatening stimulus, and cause us to question our ability to handle the situation

This is when we begin to experience anxiety

It is difficult to know the difference between a real warning and a misfire in the moment - which triggers concern for our safety

**

There is power in being able to differentiate between what is real and what is not

The trick is being able to feel it, and notice, without engaging

“This is my anxiety talking. If I ride this out, it will subside”

A traumatic experience activates the body’s stress response

Following a traumatic event, it is typical to see decreased functioning in prefrontal cortex
(decision-making, planning, social behaviour, and appropriate self-expression)

Following a traumatic event, it is typical to see an increase in amygdala responses
(perceived threats and fear-related behaviours)

Trauma is that scarring that makes you feel less flexible, more rigid, and more defended
- Dr. Gabor Maté

Benefits of engaging in trauma therapy include:
- understanding your feelings and experiences
- learning healthy coping skills
- connecting with people, and resources
- ultimately growing from your experience
