Let's say hello again to Dr. Khadija Ahmed!

- Welcome back! What have you been up to since your last rotation at SMHC?
🥼Since my last rotation at SMHC, I’ve rotated through a busy community family medicine practice and also spent some time in paediatric emergency. It was a great mix – from working with patients to manage chronic conditions in the community, to handling acute cases in the ED. Definitely kept me on my toes and helped me build both confidence and adaptability!

- What are you excited to bring into this rotation?
🩺I’m excited to bring a stronger approach to managing acutely unwell patients from my peds emerg experience, as well as a renewed focus on continuity of care and shared decision making from community family medicine.

- What do you hope to improve or explore this time around?
💊🏥I’d like to continue improving my diagnostic reasoning and procedural skills, as well as refining management plans in a patient-centred manner with shared decision making. I’m also hoping to hone my skills in preventative care, teaching/patient education, and health promotion!

- What do you enjoy most about being back at SMHC?
👨‍👨‍👧‍👦👩‍⚕️The people! The best part about being back at SMHC is the supportive environment. The staff, preceptors, residents, and patients create a collaborative space that makes learning here so enjoyable and meaningful!

- Any new hobbies or interests you’ve discovered?
⚱️👩‍🎨Yes! I’ve recently picked up pottery! Definitely more challenging than I anticipated, but just a great creative outlet!

- What would you tell yourself on day one of residency?
👩‍🏫 You don’t always have to have it all figured out, just stay curious, ask questions, and embrace moments of uncertainty as opportunities for growth. The beauty of family medicine is that there are always new opportunities for learning!

🌎Where are you from?

🎓Where did you go to medical school?
Western University

🥼What motivated you to pursue a career in family medicine?
Whenever I thought about a “doctor” I only ever thought of a family physician. Through medical school I saw that there was so many different fields in medicine. But I kept going back to family medicine as the specialty that intrigued me the most and had the best of so many parts of everything I liked. I also have interests in social justice, marginalized populations, and advocacy which I believe aligns best with a career in family medicine.

🩺Why did you choose SMHC for your family medicine residency?
I did my core rotation here as a medical student and loved the staff, residents, and physicians here. I love the integration of hospitalist, care of the elderly, palliative, emergency and comprehensive family care in one program. There’s also a large Indigenous patient population and I’m looking forward to learning from our patients and staff about holistic medicine and practices through my time here.

🎾What's your go-to activity when you need to unwind?
I like to pickle when the weather’s nice and lines at the public courts aren’t too long. Otherwise I love Wednesday night Survivor.

🍗What is your favourite food or dish?
Fried chicken - in pretty much any form, cuisine, country, or medium you can think of.

🐯🐱🦄Fun fact or hidden talent?
I can make a few different types of balloon animals.

On this Thanksgiving Day, let's say hello again to Dr. Yuchen Cen!

- Welcome back! What have you been up to since your last rotation at SMHC?
🏥Working in the ICU and Medicine ward in St. Thomas hospital which was a great experience in acute care management, hands on procedural skills and dealing with some very sick patients and conditions. Glad to be back and to use that information to help prevent things from getting that far.

- What are you excited to bring into this rotation?
🩺Excited to bring my experiences from working with our internal medicine and specialist colleagues in managing complex condition and cardiac risk stratification and prevention strategies to help our patient population! Hopefully I won’t be needing to run any codes or putting in any chest tubes here.

- What do you hope to improve or explore this time around?
👨‍⚕️Exploring ways to help promote healthy life styles and preventative care to avoid needing to go to the hospital!

- What do you enjoy most about being back at SMHC?
👩‍⚕️Seeing all the friendly faces from the front and back office to our amazing nurses (Nurse Heidi!) who run the show in addition to following up on our patients and how their summers have been.

- Any new hobbies or interests you’ve discovered?
🧗‍♂️I’ve recently(ish) got into rock climbing which has been a lot of fun but the injuries are starting to pile up so we’ll see how long it lasts, its been fun to challenge my slight fear of heights.

- Advice to your past self: What would you tell yourself on day one of residency?
😁It only gets better from here!

- What’s something you’re excited about in the next year—professionally or personally?
🏅💊Working on my procedural joint injection skills from my sports medicine rotations to help more patients with chronic joint pain to have relief and playing collegiate tennis when I’m able to.

Today, we honour the Survivors of residential schools, remember the children who never returned home, and acknowledge the enduring impacts on Indigenous families, communities, and culture.

This day is a time to reflect, learn, and to take meaningful steps toward reconciliation. Wearing orange is a way to show support and affirm that Every Child Matters.

Healing, justice, and truth are journeys that must be walked together.
